Are you a visionary leader with a passion for nursing excellence and hospital operations? UPMC Jameson and UPMC Horizon are seeking a dynamic Director, Nursing Operations to oversee our Infusion Center, Inpatient Rehabilitation, IV Therapy Team, Wound Care Team, Resource Pool, and Administrators on Duty across three campuses. This regional role will rotate between UPMC Jameson in New Castle, PA, UPMC Horizon - Shenango Valley in Farrell, PA, and UPMC Horizon Greenville in Greenville, PA.

As the Director, Nursing Operations, you will be responsible for ensuring that nursing care is provided according to current policy, standard of care, regulatory, and budgetary guidelines. You will achieve quality patient care through effective leadership and utilization of human and fiscal resources. Your visionary leadership, knowledge of present and future trends, strategic benchmarking, and innovative interventions will drive the development, effective operations, and evaluation of our nursing units.

This position is Monday - Friday during the day but requires 24/7 responsibility for the units you oversee. Experience in hospital operations is a plus!

Responsibilities:
  • Champion the Mission: Effectively communicate and embody the mission, vision, and philosophy of Patient Care Services, Nursing, and UPMC. Drive accountability for UPMC Experience initiatives, outcomes, and action planning to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Strategic Leadership: Conduct comprehensive analyses of nursing division areas, identifying strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats. Use these insights to inform proactive processes and strategic plans, demonstrating responsiveness to evolving healthcare demands and setting operational and financial goals consistent with UPMC's short and long-term objectives.
  • Capacity and Safety Management: Oversee capacity management and develop strategies to achieve budgeted outcomes for average length of stay. Collaborate with stakeholders across departments to ensure the environment of care meets patient safety and regulatory standards, fostering a culture of safety and compliance.
  • Change Management: Lead change effectively through shared leadership, evaluating nursing care outcomes to support ongoing growth and development. Address complex, high-risk problems with initiative, transforming them into opportunities and challenges, and demonstrating resilient behaviors.
  • Operational Excellence: Direct divisional activities to achieve organizational operational imperatives, fostering director and staff input. Make informed decisions and evaluate outcomes with thorough knowledge and consideration of stakeholders, ensuring operational excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Satisfaction and Standards: Achieve patient, caregiver, and physician satisfaction by establishing professional nursing standards for quality, legal, and ethical practice. Promote patient safety initiatives and lead multidisciplinary teams to ensure high levels of satisfaction and care quality.
  • Budget and Performance Oversight: Oversee the preparation of the nursing division's annual budget based on patient, clinical program, staff, and physician needs. Monitor expenses and man-hour utilization to ensure budgetary standards are met, and complete performance reviews timely to maintain high performance levels.
  • Educational and Professional Development: Collaborate with peer nursing leaders across UPMC to support joint educational opportunities and develop interventions to resolve nursing issues. Provide relevant knowledge related to organizational changes and participate in professional organizations to enhance personal growth and foster collaborative relationships regionally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Quality and Safety Initiatives: Implement nursing care process improvements to achieve optimal quality outcomes and develop systems for comprehensive patient/family care. Conduct clinical variance trend analyses, recommend and implement practice changes, and maintain NDNQI and other quality data to ensure continuous quality improvement.
  • Mentorship and Leadership: Act as a coach or mentor to other leaders within the hospital, fostering peer-to-peer accountability and professional development. Establish liaisons, networks, and resources to facilitate the growth and development of the nursing division within the system and community, promoting shared governance through regular visibility and engagement.


Qualifications:

Master's Degree and five years of progressively increasing senior management experience are required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • *Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
