POSITION: Director of Athletics

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: The Primary function of the Director of Athletics is to provide leadership, direction and coordination of the athletic program for grades 6-12. This position oversees the Athletic Coordinator at the middle school. Primary goal is to provide each student an opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity that will develop physical skills, increase cognitive knowledge, realize a sense of worth and confidence, and develop an appreciation for the pleasures of sports and the values of discipline and sportsmanship.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
? Administer the interscholastic athletic program in accordance with the policies, rules, and regulations of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, Shoreline Conference and Pequot Conference.
? Uphold the philosophy, maintain standards for participation and enforce the rules for student eligibility as determined by the Cromwell Board of Education and outlined by Cromwell High School.
? Submit certified eligibility lists and appropriate forms to the C.I.A.C.
? Represent Cromwell High School in all interscholastic athletic business at Shoreline Conference and state meetings.
? Act as the intermediary through which all matters pertaining to athletics are brought to the attention of the principal/assistant principal.
? Foster effective communication and maintain appropriate chain of command between athletic department personnel and school administration.
? Provide leadership and direction to all personnel involved in the interscholastic athletic program: varsity coaches, junior varsity coaches, athletic trainers, and specific game personnel such as timers, scorekeepers, ticket sellers, game monitors.
? Observe and evaluate coaches as outlined in the district procedures/policies/state guidelines.
? Provide job descriptions (as needed), regulations for certification, qualifications, assignment procedures, terms of the coaching contract and evaluative procedures for all athletic department personnel. ? Provide written policies for coaching expectations and responsibilities for all coaches.
? Show coaches where they can access the C.I.A.C. handbook, sport specific packet, and other administrative duties related to coaching.
? Keep all coaches informed as to any and all changes in rules, regulations, procedures and policies as determined by the C.I.A.C. and the Shoreline Conference in regard to his specific sport.
? Provide all coaches with the appropriate C.I.A.C. forms for eligibility and tournament registration.
? Work closely with the Human Resources department regarding filling vacancies and onboarding new coaches.
? Assure that each coach possesses the State of Connecticut coaching permit and is properly certified in standard first aid and CPR and any other required training.
? Contract for services with the athletic trainer and coordinate schedule for coverage.
? Contract for services to maintain equipment as required annually.
? Provide leadership in the orientation of new athletic department personnel.
? Maintain records of coaching applications, coaching permits, first aid and CPR certification, and evaluations.
? Hire, train, and process payment for all game/meet personnel (timers, scorekeepers, ticket sellers, proctors).
? Coordinate police coverage, EMT's, town workers as needed, at athletic events.
? Serve as site director or designate a site director for CIAC events held.
? Foster the professional growth of athletic department personnel by encouraging professional development in clinics, workshops and meetings.
? Responsible for long and short range financial planning for facilities, programs, equipment and personnel.
? Develop the annual budget for the interscholastic athletic program.
? Responsible for ordering all equipment, supplies and uniforms for the interscholastic athletic program.
? Payment of officials and specific game/meet personnel.
? Work with the sports assignors for each designated sport on assignment.
? Coordinate scheduling of all athletic games, meets, events and practices for the interscholastic athletic program.
? Responsible, after consulting with the principal, town workers and coach, for the cancellation or postponement of scheduled games or contests due to unplayable conditions.
? Responsible for scheduling the use of all facilities (fields, gymnasium, track, tennis courts) for the interscholastic athletic program to park and rec. Submit game schedules for football, soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse to the town park department for field lining and maintenance.
? Works closely with town departments during the fall and spring seasons.
? Report facilities maintenance needs to custodial staff and advise principals of major maintenance and repair needs.
? Arrange and coordinate bus transportation for all away games and contests.
? Maintain records of all team and individual awards.
? Coordinate with the athletic trainer mandatory meetings for athletics to address rules and regulations, cardiac arrest, concussion, and exertional heat education.
? Work with coordinating schools of co-ops and teams of one.
? Coordinate with nurses and coaches about physical requirements and eligibility.
? Coordinates and runs athletic probation programs for grades and eligibility.
? Performs grade check for eligibility once report cards are official.
? Communicates with coaches to determine who is eligible and ineligible throughout the season.
? Collects all incident reports from coaches and submits them to the appropriate staff for review.
REPORTS: Reports to the High School Principal and the Superintendent of Schools.

QUALIFICATIONS: Intermediate Administration Certification (092) required, a coaching permit issued by the State Board of Education. An outstanding and visible communicator who welcomes interaction with all members of the school community at large.
