Job Responsibilities
The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an experienced and dedicated professional as a full-time Director of Business Operations.
Under the limited supervision of the Vice President for Finance and Operations, the Director of Business Operations serves as the leader of the Business Operations team and provides managerial oversight of the institution's budgeting and procurement processes through the implementation of institutional policies and procedures. This position is focused on streamlining the institution's business operations, ensuring excellent customer service, and maintaining compliance with institutional policies and procedures and state laws and regulations. The Director of Business Operations also prepares monthly budget statements for the institution's departments and programs, coordinates the financial aid program, and performs all accounting duties.

Key responsibilities of the Director of Business Operations

  • Department Budget Reporting and Fund Management: Responsible for preparing timely and accurate monthly budget reports for managerial review by the Vice President of Finance and Operations and departmental budget managers. Provides excellent customer service to internal stakeholders by providing accurate and timely information to internal stakeholders and answering budget related questions. Schedules quarterly budget meetings with all internal stakeholders to review financial reports. Assists the Vice President of Finance and Operations with preparing financial documents and state-mandated reports as assigned. Performs all journal entries and other accounting functions as assigned.
  • Composite Reservoir and Other Revenue Accounting: Performs the bookkeeping functions of the institution's Composite Reservoir account and the state deposit account, including providing oversight of funds collected for deposits (such as those related to Outreach, interim, meal fees, and other fines or fees). Completes the annual Bank Account Transparency and Accountability Report for approval by the Vice President of Finance and Operations. Provides regular reports to the Vice President of Finance and Operations regarding all revenue collection. Ensures the Composite Reservoir funds are managed appropriately and ensures the timely and appropriate transfer of funds. Answers questions from internal and external stakeholders regarding fee collection. Ensures timely and accurate fund transfer from the institution's Foundation.
  • Procurement and Accounts Payable Management: Emphasizes cross-functionality by managing the institutions Business Manager and filling in for that position as necessary. Enters payment requests, tracks the status of active payment requests, and monitors purchase orders as needed. Proactively manages the institution's contracts and ensures compliance with the South Carolina Consolidated Procurement Code. Develops procurement plans to meet organizational needs and maximize cost savings. Prepares solicitations and leads internal procurement review committees. Monitors vendor performance to ensure contractual compliance.
  • Financial Aid Coordination: Coordinates the institution's financial aid policies and procedures. Work closely with other departments to streamline the institution's financial aid application process to ensure limited barriers for students and their families. Holds regular meetings with internal departments to assess student financial needs and identify ways to continually update and streamline the institutions financial aid process. Transition the institutions financial aid application to one unified and virtual application. Clearly communicates with internal departments regarding student financial needs and works to identify solutions to reduce the financial burden of qualified students. Works with the institution's Foundation team to identify solutions for students with demonstrated financial need.
  • Other Duties: Participates at a high-level on institutional committees and performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Finance and Operations.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business and professional experience in related areas, such as accounting, auditing, or finance.
