Career Services Directors have primary oversight of the operations at the Career Services department within a school or at the central level, including managing individual career counseling, implementing graduate and professional school fairs, and designing seminars, workshops, and programs that assist students in the exploration and development of their future career plans. In addition, they are responsible for representing Career Services within the University community and to external stakeholders. Career Services Directors work with Associate Directors, Assistant Directors, and the Executive Director in alignment with University goals.
The McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a Director of Career Development. CCS is positioned within the Student Success Unit at McIntire and collaborates with all student-facing units to deliver exceptional student experience. CCS enjoys strong support from all constituents in the McIntire community and is recognized as an industry leader for its outstanding model of service delivery along with synergistic and enduring relationships with students, employers, and alumni.
The Director of Career Development defines and implements the strategic vision for the CCS coaching team, which must support and elevate the career development journey for all pre-COMM, undergraduate, and graduate McIntire students. This vision is metrics and benchmarking-driven, student-centered, and relies on strategic collaboration with student services, faculty, affiliate partners, and other key stakeholders, including McIntire centers and alumni. Paramount to the Director's role is infusing innovation and intentionality into the programs, services, and strategies coaches prioritize, lifting the coaching team through a commitment to professional development, and ensuring that programs, initiatives, and service delivery are meaningful, measurable, and proactive in meeting the diverse and ever-evolving interests of all CCS stakeholder. Strategic Collaborations
- Works closely with Associate Dean for Commerce Career & Corporate Engagement, Director of Data & Operations, Associate Dean for Corporate Relations, career colleagues across Grounds, and staff and faculty partners at McIntire to ensure appropriate student success support strategy and optimal workflow.
- Works to foster and establish key industry and academic coalitions & collaborations between students, alumni, faculty, employer relations, corporate development, Student Success colleagues, and the coaching team to ensure that McIntire and its students stay on the cutting edge of industry trends and are connected to people, ideas, and resources as they explore options, self-assess and build a toolkit for long-term career resiliency.
- Supports employer development team as needed and strategic alumni mentorship priorities and programs.
- Focuses on strategies for identifying & reaching the "unreachable" or unengaged McIntire students.
- Offers strategic insights into communication priorities, innovations & best practices to ensure that communication to students is timely and relevant.
- Provides leadership, supervision, and mentoring to the career coaching team. Hires, trains, and evaluates all Career Development staff members reporting to the Director, and supports their management of other staff members within the Career Development team.
- Assesses, defines, and prioritizes strategic objectives for the coaching team, evaluating and identifying strengths and areas for improvement and growth.
- In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Career Services, defines and deploys coaching strategies and organizational structures to deliver service and programs that assist in achieving the stated strategic goals of the unit.
- Benchmarks and collaborates with various stakeholders (students, faculty, industry partners, peer institutions, alumni) to stay abreast of best practices and emerging trends in coaching, career development, industry and within McIntire to continue delivering differentiated and exceptional service to existing & emerging student populations.
- Drives forward the coaching mission of setting students up for long-term career and life success and related skills vs. just first-time placement. Prioritizes small group work, alumni engagement and storytelling, exploration, self-awareness, and contingency planning.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Master's degree.
- Experience: At least seven years of related experience.
- Experience in career development, counseling, and/or professional experience in industry.
- High level of diplomacy and evidence of successful strategic collaboration with a variety of stakeholders and priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop complex teams.
- Evidence of innovation, curiosity, and commitment to continued learning.
- Ability to make researched, data-driven decisions that drive change and strategic priorities.
- Student development theory focused.
- Knowledge of current and potential platforms of interest (e.g. Handshake, Vault, 12twenty, etc.).
