POSITION SUMMARY

School nursing practice requires the combination of professional clinical nursing practice with promotion of the health, well-being, academic achievement, and success of the school-age child. The school APRNs and RNs are called upon to work closely with teachers, classroom assistants, office personnel, and technically advise the school health aide (SHA) to carry out a wide range of school health activities. The Director of Clinical Operations (DCO) is responsible for establishing and maintaining the clinical practice standards and providing professional development to the Hawaii Keiki APRNs, RNs, and HTs. In this leadership position, the DCO establishes clinical processes and procedures, monitors the quality of clinical services, trains, technically advises, mentors and supports Hawaii Keiki RNs and APRNs. The DCO will also serve as clinical representation of Hawaii Keiki nurses to community stakeholder meetings.

This is a Hybrid position that works at 0-2 days/week at UH Manoa and 3-5 days/week Work From Home (Oahu, occasional travel to other islands)

Meeting of the employee's professional responsibility will be in line with the duties described below and in coordination with the Employee's supervisor. While the Employee is not required to report to the school or complex area superintendent's office when Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) schools are closed, it is expected that the Employee will meet their professional responsibilities to the school site and program which may include attendance at scheduled meetings during non-student days.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

Leadership
  • Embraces the organizational culture and values; embodies these values in all interactions.
  • Provides clinical expertise and direction for the Hawaii Keiki program ensuring the alignment of the Hawaii Keiki goals, objectives, and priorities within the Hawaii Keiki program.
  • Maintains clinical practice by providing virtual visits and supporting sports physicals and screening events
  • Supervises Oahu, Neighbor Island and Charter Supervisors, program managers, and is the higher level supervisor for Complex Area Leads, Mental Health providers, Charter APRN and Charter RNs.
  • Provides overall professional development opportunities to Hawaii Keiki nursing groups.
  • Ensures practice standards and clinical excellence within the Hawaii Keiki program by maintaining Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement Program that is inclusive of a Chart Review Program..
  • Provides guidance to the Clinical Educator Coordinator to ensure that clinical training materials and education is consistent and evidence-based while meeting the unique needs of the various health professional staff, schools and communities being served.
  • Serves as content expert in school-based health and clinical expert in professional clinical field.
  • Creates and delegates tasks and sets deadlines for Hawaii Keiki clinical initiatives.
  • Provides guidance to senior leadership on health room budgets, management of staffing and physical resources, such as supplies and equipment.
  • As the content expert in school-based health, is the proponent of all Clinical Policies & Procedures for Hawaii Keiki - coordinates the drafts, updates, and reviews of all clinical policies & procedures prior to senior practice director approval.
  • Provides review and input to Administrative/Operational Policies & Procedures.
  • Plans and leads meetings involving clinical practice of Hawaii Keiki.
  • Represents Hawaii Keiki at all University Health Partners (UHP) clinical/quality meetings.
  • Creates and signs pediatric standing orders in collaboration with other HK nurses.
  • Serves as the designated point of contact for charting requirements in EPIC to ensure clinical documentation consistent with quality care and maximize reimbursements
  • Attends Hawaii Keiki, HIDOE and UHP leadership meetings.
  • In collaboration with the leadership team, recognize high performers and make recommendations to reward accomplishments of outstanding Hawaii Keiki team members.
  • Participates in the Hawaii Keiki interview process for all APRN candidates and other candidates as requested.
  • Provides representation of Hawaii Keiki at community stakeholder meetings.
  • Reviews monthly and quarterly data reports. Attend conferences that will enrich the Hawaii Keiki program and share information to the team.
  • Approves requests for new clinical products (point of care testing, medications, supplies).
  • Other leadership and supervisory duties as assigned.


Interdisciplinary Collaboration
  • Works collaboratively with HIDOE clinical consultant and Office of Student Services Leadership team to address any clinical and/or nursing service delivery questions within the schools.
  • Works collaboratively with the Department of Health on the coordinated school health meetings and on school health issues.
  • Facilitates relationships with community partners and stakeholders within the school community and within the Hawaii Keiki program.

Other
  • Complies with all legal requirements and company policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum:
  • A graduate degree in nursing and/or license as an APRN in Hawai'i.
  • Possession of a current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in the State of Hawai'i.
  • BLS/ Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Possession of an APRN license with prescription authority in the State of Hawai'i
  • One year of experience in school nursing/health.


Preferred:
  • A Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) Degree.
  • A graduate degree in nursing as a Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner APRN in Hawai'i.
  • Certified as a School Nurse by the National Board for Certification of School Nurses.
  • Certification as a Nurse Leader (NE-BC, NEA-BC, CENP, CNIM, CNL)
  • Certification as a nurse practitioner in an area of specialty by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or other nationally recognized certification.
  • 3 years of experience working as a school nurse or in a school-based health service setting
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership/supervisory position

Skills Knowledge

Minimum:
  • Knowledge of state medical information release procedures and laws.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA rules, regulations, and compliance.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens.
