Description:
The New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) is seeking a seasoned and high-performing Director of Communications to lead and promote the Departments mission, initiatives, and priorities. This role is responsible for creating and executing a comprehensive communications strategy encompassing media relations, social media, community engagement, and both internal and external messaging.
The selected candidate must possess a passion for making New Mexico a better place and embrace the mission of the NMDOJ to promote good government, safeguard the public interest and protect vulnerable members of our community through dedicated and professional advocacy. The NMDOJ serves as the chief legal authority for the state of New Mexico, with a responsibility for defending the legal rights and interests of New Mexico citizens, state agencies and organizations.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Attorney General and NMDOJ leadership to develop and implement effective communication strategies.
- Develop messaging plans to address emerging issues and support key initiatives.
- Provide leadership and support in areas of media and public interest, and ensure messaging reflects the goals and mission of the NMDOJ.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with media outlets, elected officials, public agencies, and community stakeholders.
-Serve as spokesperson and primary media contact for the NMDOJ, and respond timely to inquiries from reporters, media representatives, and community stakeholders.
-Initiate and arrange events to promote and support NMDOJ actions and initiatives.
-Manage, lead, motivate and support NMDOJ communication staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in communications, public relations, journalism, business administration, or related field.
-Five years of experience in large-scale communications, preferably in the public sector.
-Demonstrated leadership experience, and experience working with attorneys and high-level executive staff.
-Understanding of public policy and current events, specifically related to the work of the NMDOJ.
-Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
-Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
