POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Detention Services is responsible for managing the overall operations of the Juvenile Detention Center. Responsibilities include overseeing program implementation and levels of service, providing training and supervision for all assigned Team leaders and staff, completing evaluations and issuing discipline, ensuring quality and timely completion of documentation, maintaining positive customer relations with internal and external parties, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies, and standards set forth by various governing bodies. Anyone performing this role must exhibit excellent organizational skills, effective time management, outstanding customer service, exceptional written and oral communication, effective teambuilding skills, and positive leadership qualities.

PRIMARY JOB EXPECTATIONS

1. Leadership and Supervision
  • Builds and maintains a positive team environment
  • Provides guidance, support and direction to all assigned team leaders through individual and group supervision, and team meetings.
  • Helps to mentor new staff and facilitates trainings to aid in professional development.
  • Provides accountability to team members through supervisions, evaluations, and any necessary discipline.
  • Shares in a rotation to serve as on call management to provide support and direction after hours.

2. Operational Oversight of the Unit
  • Oversee all aspects of the daily operations of the unit including intakes/releases, programming, medical services, educational services, recreation, and transportation.
  • Understands and helps to meet the needs of the Youth Opportunity Center's primary customers: the child, family, Courts, Juvenile Probation Department, Department of Child Services, and the schools. Communicates and seeks resolution when problems arise
  • Maintains knowledge of and ensures adherence to organizational policies and compliance with all external regulations and standards. Over sees the preparation and serves as the point of contact for external audits of the Detention Center.
  • In conjunction with HR is responsible for interviewing and hiring staff, and ensuring appropriate staffing levels within the unit.
  • Assists in developing the budget and monitoring financials for the program.
  • Helps to monitor maintenance issues and the overall appearance of the unit

3. Program Development & Implementation
  • Provides oversight and monitoring for consistent implementation of the program and daily schedule, including direction on interventions and techniques for effective behavior management.
  • Ensures quality and timely completion of all required documentation.
  • Examines outcomes and various other data collection and tracking reports and ensures proper follow up.
  • Maintains an awareness of trends in the field and legislative initiatives that might impact Detention services.

4. Other Administrative Duties
  • Represents the Detention Center program in the community, and on State level committees
  • Responsible for the short-term planning process for Detention
  • Actively participates in designated meetings and serves on committees, as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Master's degree from an accredited university with connected knowledge in social services or Bachelor's degree and two years' experience or High School diploma and four years' experience. . Degree and experience leading teams, familiarity with audits, and facilitating trainings preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Detention Services will supervise the Detention Team leaders, and NW staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Typical work week is Monday-Friday 40 hours. Position requires participation in an on-call rotation. The Detention Director will have regular contact with the YOC program/clinical staff members, members of office administration, and YOC executive staff members. Direct contact with state agencies, accrediting bodies, and placing agencies by phone and in person is a function of this position. Courtesy and professionalism are expected at all times.

This position is full-time, and compensation includes a competitive salary and benefits plan.
