Summary

The Director of Development Projects will oversee the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) management for large/utility-scale energy projects. Manage the entire project lifecycle-from initial feasibility studies through to commissioning and operations. Work closely with senior leadership to align development initiatives with organizational goals and strategic objectives.

Primary Duties

Project Lifecycle Management

  • Lead and oversee the development of large-scale greenfield energy projects, managing the full EPC lifecycle (design, procurement, construction, and commissioning).
  • Ensure projects meet performance, schedule, quality, and safety targets, from feasibility and permitting through to handover and commissioning.


Design & Development Oversight

  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight on the design and engineering of greenfield energy projects, ensuring that designs align with client goals, technical standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure that project specifications, safety standards, and environmental considerations are integrated into the design and development process.


Stakeholder and Client Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, stakeholders, contractors, regulatory authorities, and internal teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and alignment on project goals and timelines.


Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers, project managers, and other specialists, providing mentorship and fostering a collaborative and high-performance work culture.
  • Develop and manage project teams, ensuring that resource allocation and staffing needs are met to successfully execute projects.


Regulatory & Permitting

  • Oversee the permitting process for greenfield power projects, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as environmental and safety standards.
  • Work with legal and environmental teams to navigate regulatory frameworks, securing necessary permits and approvals for the development of projects.


Risk Management & Problem Resolution

  • Identify and mitigate project risks, including technical, financial, and regulatory challenges.
  • Develop and implement proactive risk management strategies to avoid project delays and budget overruns.


Financial Oversight & Budget Management

  • Manage and control project budgets, ensuring effective cost management and adherence to financial goals.
  • Work with finance and procurement teams to ensure that project budgets are realistic, and expenditures are tracked accurately.
  • Lead contract negotiations and manage relationships with contractors and vendors to ensure favorable terms for the company.


Business Development & Strategic Growth

  • Support business development activities by identifying new project opportunities and working with clients to develop tailored solutions for renewable and conventional generation projects.
  • Stay informed of industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes to help guide strategic decision-making and expand the company's project portfolio.


Post-Construction & Operational Handover

  • Ensure smooth handover from construction to operations, working with operations teams to ensure proper transition and operational readiness.
  • Monitor performance during early operations to ensure the project meets energy generation and financial goals.


Working Relationships

The Director of Development Projects reports to the SVP, Engineered Performance.

Compensation

The initial compensation will range from $140,000 - $161,000.

Education and Experience:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or related fields) or a related technical discipline. A Master's degree or MBA is a plus.

Years of Experience:

    • 10 years of experience in energy project development, with a strong focus on EPC management for large-scale renewable and conventional power generation projects.
    • Experience with design, development, or oversight of Greenfield power generation projects.


Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate cross-functional teams to successfully execute complex projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of power generation technologies, including both renewable and conventional methods, and familiarity with the specific technical and regulatory challenges of greenfield development.
  • Excellent financial management skills, including budgeting, cost control, and contract negotiation.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to liaise with senior executives, clients, regulatory bodies, and contractors.
  • Expertise in navigating permitting processes and addressing environmental and regulatory challenges associated with energy projects.
  • PMP (Project Management Professional) or similar project management certification preferred.
  • LEED or other sustainability-related certifications may be advantageous, especially for renewable energy projects.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Travel will be required for onsite work for 30-45 days. Remote work is acceptable but must be located near a major airport.
