Job Description

The Director will be responsible for cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts from individual, corporate, and foundation supporters who have an interest in supporting the Office of Veteran & Military Affairs. The Director will work collaboratively with college-based development officers and central services, and report to the Executive Director of Military and Veteran Development.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred, with a minimum of four years of higher education or non-profit fund raising experience.
  • Experience working in a complex environment similar to Syracuse University, with proven experience in leading a successful fundraising program.
  • Experience working with both individual donors as well corporations and foundations.
  • Experience in volunteer recruitment and management.


Skills and Knowledge
  • Demonstrated success in fund-raising specifically with individual donors, including a track record of identifying, cultivating and closing gifts.
  • Outstanding ability to network with colleagues within a large academic institution.
  • Ideal candidate will be an articulate individual with personal integrity, strong interpersonal skills, creative, flexible, organized, and self-motivated, with good planning and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in developing strategic plans and initiating and implementing programs.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral.
  • Discretion and an ability to interact with donors as well as an ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, as well as to work outside the normal workday.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.
  • Experience with capital campaign planning and execution preferred.


Responsibilities
  • Build and manage a donor portfolio of corporations, foundations, and individuals to solicit and close gifts for the Office of Veteran and Military Affairs with an emphasis on gifts at the $100,000+ level.
  • Conduct all stages of the major gift solicitation process: discover, qualify, cultivate, solicit (including writing corporate, foundation, and federal grants or applications), and steward.
  • Develop, implement and drive fund-raising strategies designed to maximize current giving potential for each prospect in the portfolio by creating support and facilitating cooperation throughout the campus community in pursuit of the best strategy for each donor.
  • Update donor records in Citrus database following donor contacts.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director of the OVMA and the Executive Director of Veteran and Military Development, manage the operations of the advisory board and serve as the key staff liaison for key volunteers and advisory board members.
  • Work collaboratively with unit and centrally based AEA offices including Advancement Services, Research & Prospect Systems, Alumni Relations, Annual Giving, Gift Planning and University Communications.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, administrators and staff volunteers associated with specific programs relevant to assigned prospects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
