Compensation: $115K - $130K

The Spirit of the Position

The Director of DOT Safety plays a critical leadership role in ensuring regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and a culture of safety across LAZ's Transportation Division. Reporting to the Senior Director of Safety, this position leads a team of 10+ Regional DOT Safety Managers and works closely with frontline leadership, regional and executive leaders, HR, Legal, and Risk Management.

This role requires a proactive, hands-on leader who can monitor and enforce DOT compliance, drive safety initiatives, conduct training, investigate incidents, and champion a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead and mentor a team of 10+ Regional DOT Safety Managers across the U.S.
  • Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure safety performance.
  • Build strong relationships with operations teams to align safety strategies with business objectives.
  • Partner with HR & Operations on employee engagement initiatives and safety-related events.
  • Work with Compliance & Financial Audit teams to ensure all safety and security standards are met.
DOT Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure adherence to all DOT/FMCSA regulations, including driver hours of service, vehicle inspections, maintenance, and drug & alcohol testing.
  • Conduct regular safety audits to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Investigate accidents/incidents, determine root causes, and develop preventative strategies.
  • Manage driver qualification files and oversee compliance with medical certificates, background checks, and training.
Safety Training & Culture Development
  • Design and deliver comprehensive safety training programs, including defensive driving, DOT regulations, and hazard awareness.
  • Partner with HR to enhance onboarding for new drivers, including tracking surveys, quizzes, and new-hire evaluations.
  • Lead safety awareness campaigns to foster a proactive safety-first culture.
Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement
  • Analyze safety data to identify trends, high-risk areas, and areas for improvement.
  • Prepare reports on accident rates, driver violations, and compliance metrics.
  • Present findings to executive leadership and recommend risk-mitigation strategies.
Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience & Knowledge
  • 7-10+ years in DOT safety, transportation compliance, fleet management, or risk management.
  • In-depth knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Proven leadership experience in multi-location operations.
  • Strong understanding of safety audits, compliance tracking, and accident prevention strategies.
Skills & Competencies
  • Excellent leadership, coaching, and team-building skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in safety management systems and data analysis tools.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with HR, Legal, and Risk Management.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Power BI, etc.).
Preferred Certifications
  • Certified Director of Safety (CDS) - North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) - Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP)
  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification
  • Smith System Defensive Driving Certification
Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Transportation, Safety, Business Administration, or related field OR equivalent work experience.

Travel:

  • Must be willing to travel 25% within assigned region(s) as necessary.
