Position Summary

ION is looking for a fulltime, dedicated Director of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) to join our expanding organization. Reporting directly to the SVP, Engineering and based in our Boulder, Colorado headquarters, the Director, EH&S is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and maintenance of the comprehensive environmental health and safety programs within ION. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, minimizing workplace risks, and fostering a culture of safety and environmental stewardship across all departments. The Director of EH&S will also lead a team of EH&S professionals and collaborate with various stakeholders to identify, assess, and mitigate potential hazards while promoting continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive EH&S strategy aligned with organizational goals, including risk management, compliance, sustainability, and employee safety.
    • Establish clear EH&S policies, procedures, and performance metrics to measure program effectiveness.
    • Develop, lead and manage a team of EH&S professionals, providing guidance, coaching, and career development opportunities.
    • Regularly communicate EH&S performance metrics and updates to senior leadership.
  • Compliance Management:
    • Ensure adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and relevant industry standards.
    • Conduct regular compliance audits and assessments to identify potential risks and non-compliance issues.
    • Develop and implement corrective action plans to address compliance gaps and mitigate risks.
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation:
    • Conduct thorough risk assessments across all operations to identify potential hazards and prioritize mitigation strategies.
    • Lead incident investigations to determine root causes and implement preventive measures to prevent future occurrences.
    • Develop and implement safety programs to address specific hazards, such as hazardous materials management, machine safety, and ergonomics.
  • Training and Education:
    • Design and deliver comprehensive EH&S training programs for all employees, including new hire orientation, refresher courses, and specialized training based on job roles.
    • Foster a safety culture through awareness campaigns, employee engagement initiatives, and open communication channels.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field (or equivalent education and experience)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a similar role
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other relevant certifications highly desirable
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local EH&S regulations and compliance requirements
  • Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing comprehensive EH&S programs
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address EH&S risks
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively communicate EH&S information to diverse audiences
