POSITION PURPOSE

The Director of Facilities, reporting to the Vice Dean of Engineering, is responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure projects, for the College of Engineering. This role provides strategic leadership and technical expertise in a collaborative environment, ensuring that the infrastructure team supports the College of Engineering's Strategic Plan. The Director will play a pivotal role in enabling transformative learning, teaching, research, and administrative experiences, all centered around Engineering Excellence for the Public Good.

POSITION COMPLEXITIES

The Director of Facilities is expected to represent the College on campus regarding all matters related to facilities development and utilization. This includes participation on committees, attending meetings with internal and external stakeholders, and being a primary liaison with University shops and groups. The Director will also oversee the College's Facilities Team, and direct and delegate work within that team as appropriate.

POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY

The College of Engineering has a large footprint of buildings on campus that include classroom spaces, administrative spaces, labs and other research space, and shared user facilities. This position is expected to support them and more new spaces that develop as the College grows to house more centers that help us partner with area industry As such, this position is pivotal in advancing the College's strategic plan around Engineering Excellence for the Public Good.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Facility Development & Utilization

  • Identify and direct facility improvements, development, space utilization, and recovery to support current and future College of Engineering facilities. This includes research centers, classroom and office buildings and/or spaces.

  • Promote and increase the College's shared user facilities; support existing shared user facilities including MolES, NanoES, MAF, and WNF.

  • Provide leadership and participate in College facilities activities, including strategy development and short- and long-range planning.

  • Oversee execution of approved biennial Major / Minor Capital projects in a timely and effective manner, including project management, construction, implementation of design.

  • Direct necessary data gathering and analysis.

  • Manage data regarding space inventory, including how College spaces are used.

  • Lead College response to space inventory inquiries and related management.

  • Maintain regular communication with College academic units and research centers.

  • Stay appraised of any needed improvements and/or space needs.

  • Communicate and prioritize unit and research centers facilities needs to College leadership.

  • Work with College units to identify facility issues, oversee program and facility needs, evaluate alternatives, develop scopes and schedules - following projects from start to completion.

    Campus Partnerships & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure that College of Engineering facilities comply with UW Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) regulations, policies, and best practices to maintain a safe, sustainable, and health-conscious environment.

  • Represent the College of Engineering in all matters relating to health and safety both departmentally and campus wide.

  • Represent or delegate someone to represent the College on facility matters at meetings and on committees. Assist in presentations as appropriate.

  • Attend on behalf of the College meetings on design reviews, value engineering, construction coordination and inspections etc.

  • Act as primary liaison to UW Facilities including the Project Delivery Group, Campus Architecture and Planning, Engineering Services, Real Estate, Maintenance and Construction.

  • Communicate information regarding facilities, such as safety updates, building and renovation projects, and capital projects to impacted stakeholders and communities.

    Facilities Strategic Planning

  • Oversee the College of Engineering's program renewal fund process, ensuring effective allocation and utilization of financial resources for facility improvements.

  • Support College leadership in major capital planning, budget development, and execution of capital projects.

  • Advocate for the College's research and educational mission while aligning with the UW's capital planning and infrastructure goals.

  • Identify institutional policies and/or practices that affect maintenance operations and ensure productive resolution of problems.

    Facilities Team Supervision

  • Oversee the Dean's Office Facilities Team, which includes a Facilities Manager and a Facilities Program Operations Specialist.

  • Provide annual performance reviews, regular feedback, coaching, and professional development for direct reports and team.

  • Direct and delegate work to appropriate staff on the College's Facilities Team.

  • Create and manage a Facilities Community of Practice for the College that aims to connect and inform facilities staff across the College's units and centers.

    This role is critical to shaping the future of the College of Engineering's research and educational environment, ensuring world-class infrastructure that supports innovation and academic excellence.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Construction Project Management, or related field.

  • Minimum of five years experience in facilities in positions of increasing complexity and responsibility.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated experience in managing capital projects.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand construction drawings, schedules and budgets.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in safety - ability to recognize and address unsafe conditions.

  • Demonstrated experience working both independently and in collaborative team environments.

  • Ability to prioritize and complete complex assignments efficiently and on time.

  • Demonstrated excellent client service skills and ability to work with people of various levels of technical background.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with the University of Washington's processes and procedures related to capital projects, safety and maintenance.

  • Experience with space allocation in a constrained environment.

  • Experience in education, government, or not-for-profit organizations.
