The Opportunity
As the Director of Finance, you will be a key strategic partner, overseeing financial operations and ensuring the long-term financial health of the company. You will be responsible for financial planning, forecasting, and risk management while driving process improvements to support operational efficiency. This role is positioned to evolve into the head of the finance department, providing long-term leadership and strategic direction for the organization's financial operations, based on performance and business needs.
Your leadership will guide the accounting team in maintaining strong internal controls, ensuring compliance, and optimizing financial systems to align with our business objectives. This role requires a deep understanding of financial management within the construction industry, and experience in the development sector is a valuable asset.
Notably, a key initiative you will be leading is the transition to a new accounting software. This includes the evaluation, selection, and implementation of the new system. Not only will you be the key subject matter expert for this initiative, you will also ensure effective training and education for all business units.

Your Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership
- Develop and execute the company's financial strategy to support growth, profitability, and sustainability.
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to the senior leadership team to inform decision-making and drive strategic initiatives, cost optimization and operational improvements.
- Collaborate with the senior leadership team to align financial goals with operational and business development strategies.
- Monitor market and industry trends, risks, and opportunities to maintain a competitive edge in the construction sector.
- Play a key role in supporting investment strategies for Fillmore Construction and its affiliated group of companies. This includes evaluating opportunities, managing financial risk, and providing strategic insights to drive long-term growth and sustainability across the organization.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Oversee the development and management of annual budgets and long-term financial forecasts.
- Analyze financial performance against budgets, track key financial metrics, and provide recommendations for adjustments.
- Support strategic planning by projecting future financial performance based on industry trends and company objectives.
Financial Planning, Reporting and Compliance
- Oversee the preparation and presentation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports to the Leadership Team, including; financial statements, bank reporting, and project financial reports (project health, forecasting, invoicing, aging)
- Develop and maintain financial reporting dashboards to track organizational performance
- Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations, standards and internal policies
- Optimize cash management strategies and manage cash flow, liquidity, and working capital to ensure operational stability and growth.
- Manage internal and external audits, resolving issues efficiently and implementing corrective actions as needed.
Leadership and Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting specialists, fostering a high-performing and collaborative culture
- Provide training and development opportunities to enhance team skills and career growth
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide construction feedback, and support succession planning
- Work with teams and departments to identify financial reporting needs, ensuring and build financial competency across departments
- Foster a strong sense of financial accountability and transparency at all levels
Accounting Operations and Internal Controls
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, payroll, and project cost accounting
- Ensure month-end and year-end closings are completed accurately and on time
- Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and adjustments to ensure financial accuracy
- Establish and uphold robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and financial integrity
Systems and Process Optimization
- Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new accounting software and financial systems, ensuring it meets financial and operational reporting needs.
- Oversee the integration of ERP systems to support financial and operational reporting
- Continuously evaluate and improve financial systems and processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Provide training and support to the accounting team on new financial systems and best practices
Risk Management
- Identify financial and operational risks and implement mitigation strategies
- Oversee the risk management process, including insurance, bonding; maintaining appropriate coverage and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations
- Collaborate with legal and operational teams to identify and mitigate financial risks associated with contracts, projects, and business transactions
HSEQ
- Adhere to the standards and procedures outlined in the company's Health, Safety, and Environment program
Your Key Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation preferred.
- Minimum 10+ years of progressive experience in finance roles, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity within the construction industry.
- Advanced knowledge of financial management, accounting principles, and best practices in the construction industry.
- Proven track record of leading successful accounting software implementations.
- Expertise in financial forecasting, budgeting, and modeling, with strong analytical capabilities.
- Proven ability to lead, manage and develop a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- In-depth understanding of risk management, bonding, regulatory compliance, and cash flow management.
- High proficiency in ERP systems and advanced MS Excel skills.
- Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
- Knowledge of the development sector is an asset.
