Brief Job Description

San Jose Country Club has a strong, successful Fitness and Aquatics team and is searching for a high-performing, goal-oriented, Director of Fitness & Aquatics who is looking to help open an brand new fitness facility and step into a leadership role.

The Director position has responsibility for all day-to-day Fitness & Aquatics operations, cleanliness, and managing a small staff as the Club continues to evolve and take our programming and service to even higher levels of excellence. The new Director's keys to success are to be visible, engaging, and to maintain excellent communication the team, and the membership.

The Director is responsible for assisting in the creation, implementation, and consistent execution of all program and service standards and processes while providing innovative, relevant, and respectful leadership to Fitness and Aquatics staff. This position will also source, onboard, provide training for, and manage the seasonal aquatics staff.

Being a positive mentor to the team is vital, as is being a strong advocate for the team's success. The Director must be a proactive and organized leader, with a focus on maintaining and enforcing standard operating procedures. Additionally, they must work to exceed the expectations of members and to recognize trends and evolving demographics, to ensure future success.

INITIAL PRIORITIES OF THE DIRECTOR OF FITNESS & AQUATICS

The following priorities have been identified for the initial primary focus:
  • Observe, listen, ask questions, and learn about the culture and history of San Jose Country Club. The Club is open to changes and improvements, but it is imperative to first understand the culture, overall history, expectations, etc.
  • Meet and sincerely engage with as many members as possible. Being "front-facing" and engaged in all Fitness/Aquatics operations and especially during member high usage times is important.
  • Work closely with team members to ensure that an appropriate foundation of success is in place, both in the programming and service execution sides of the operation. Fitness & Aquatic operations are of utmost importance to the membership and meeting members' expectations in this area is a critical success factor.
  • Spend time with the team, get to know them, their abilities, their aspirations, and further their already strong mutual respect and collaborative approach to supporting one another while advancing the Club's overall mission.
  • Examine, elevate, and maintain all inventory and merchandise. Ensure that products and merchandise are evaluated with a focus on desirability and relevancy.
  • Begin to build and maintain an active personal training client list.
  • Continue the development of processes to ensure the highest levels of cleanliness and the staff remains at an exceptional level.

Candidate Qualifications

A key requirement is an ability to work proactively with the team while focusing on key goals and objectives that benefit the long-term success of the Fitness and Aquatics operations.

Outstanding communication skills are a necessity. Additionally, a keen ability to listen, engage, build trust, and be highly approachable is critically important.

Other key attributes, characteristics, and styles of the successful new Assistant include the following:
  • Operations, facilities, and preferably some management/supervisory experience.
  • An exceptional communicator with the ability to sincerely listen to member and staff concerns and suggestions.
  • Has an energetic and outgoing personality and can demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Must be organized, punctual, and professional.
  • Help to anticipate how the Club will evolve and be at the forefront of trends in the industry.
  • Knowledgeable and innovative as it relates to Fitness/Wellness; having the experience and ability to work with a wide variety of body types and physical impairments is vital.
  • Outgoing, respectful, and diplomatic, but able to say "no" when appropriate without alienating members or staff while doing so.
  • Attract, retain, and develop programs for member clients.
  • Innately understanding, reliable, and relatable to members and staff.

Educational Requirements

A Bachelor's Degree from a four-year university or college is desirable, but not required. A nationally recognized personal training certification is required (NASM, ACSM, NSCA, AFAA, ACE, etc.). Credentials from the Fitness and Aquatics industries, recognizing ongoing involvement and commitment to personal and professional development are desired.

Other Benefits

Compensation consists of a base Salary plus commissions. The club, along with continuing education benefits, offers an excellent benefits package.

Compensation: $75,000.00 per year
