EVONIK Vancouver Laboratories (VAN), the operating drug delivery service site of Evonik Canada Inc., is a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) that provides CMC services to biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies engaged in the development and manufacture of complex delivery-based drug formulations.

EVONIK's range of services extends from initial formulation prototype identification, manufacturing process development & scale-up, analytical method development & validation to support raw material, in-process, release and stability testing, all the way through to sterile product manufacturing under GMP for Phase I-II clinical trials. Products include the LIPEX line of Extruders, which are designed to enable small-scale to commercial scale manufacturing of liposomal drug products. RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversees the daily operation of the Formulation & Process Development (FPD) group at VAN. Establishes and promotes departmental operations to meet customer expectations, business requirements, operational budgets and ensures that all activities are compliant with Evonik EHS rules.
  • The role will serve as the senior technical relationship manager for CDMO customers and manages communications as appropriate for product development topics to customers and senior management.
  • Provides the strategic direction of the FPD department, setting the plan for CAPEX, processes and influences interdepartmental relationships to increase efficiency and profitability.
  • Supervises the FPD group with the support of an Associate Director and Manager as appropriate to ensure all staff can perform the duties to deliver complex customer projects.
  • Effectively communicates direction, objectives and business results as needed to the department, site, or Evonik leadership
  • Collaborates with Sales and Marketing to win new programs
  • Evaluates technical aspects of new programs, discusses projects with potential clients, and supports the preparation of project proposals/budgets
  • Proposes and develops continuous improvement initiatives to optimize processes for enhanced safety, efficiency, or to improve the level of control and performance.
  • Represent VAN at regional, national, and international conferences, committees and working groups acting as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Operates as an independent subject matter expert for FPD maintaining a business partnership with managers from other departments to ensure the creation and alignment of customer project proposals and statement of works
  • Effectively communicates with client technical or product outsourcing counterparts to ensure full support of customer requirements.
  • Identify new scientific trends, technologies, and opportunities to expand the company's CDMO business offerings.
  • Maintain current scientific knowledge relevant to lipid-based drug-product formulations and processing.


REQUIREMENTS
  • An advanced postgraduate degree preferably in engineering, pharmaceutics, or basic science with a sufficiently demonstrated level of performance and capability.
  • Credible scientific background preferably with 10+ years' experience in the fast-paced CDMO industry and/or with significant experience, in a lead role, in the successful translation of a lipid-based drug delivery formulation from development to clinic
  • A customer-centric mindset with proven experience in successfully leading cultural transformations across multifunctional groups.
  • Excellent leadership skills with an understanding of how best to utilize, deploy and manage staff.
  • Capable of creating strong relationships across a multifunctional business and effective at connecting sites, departments, and people together.
  • Ability to nurture relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Great understanding of operations across various functions, including Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Production, Supply Chain and Engineering.
  • Emotionally intelligent with a mind-set to work within a chaotic and fast-paced CDMO.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement business strategies, i.e., organizational structure, change management, budget development, project management and strategic staffing plan.
  • Knowledge and experience with regulations related to safety and environmental compliance.
  • Knowledge of the use of PPE, safety protocols and practices related to working with or exposure to hazardous chemicals that could potentially affect the health of the employees
