Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY

The Director of Health Physical Education and Athletics is a full-time, 12-month administrator who Provides for District-wide coordination and development of all programs of health, physical education and interscholastic sports including the development of short- and long-range plans.

IMPROVING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
  • Sets goals and objectives for the District's K-12 health & physical education programs, works with the Associate Superintendent of Instruction and building administrators to implement and administer these goals, and evaluates the results in accordance with District needs and expectations.
  • Stimulates and encourages programming to effectively utilize the health and physical education staff to help all students learn.
  • Conducts analyses of health, physical education, and athletic programs and suggests program adjustments based on analyses.
  • Coordinates and facilitates the development of new programs, procedures, and activities to deliver health and physical education program more effectively in the District.
  • Coordinates the development of the K-12 health and physical education curriculum.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, records and statistics for the health, physical education, and interscholastic athletic program.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors the Physical Education Plan required by the New York State Department of Education.
  • Coordinates and administers federal and state laws, State Education Department Commissioner's Regulations, school policies, and other requirements that relate to the health, physical education, and athletic programs.
  • Keeps abreast of changes and developments in education and uses this knowledge constructively in the operation of the health, physical education, and athletics program.
  • Keeps the Superintendent and other leadership staff informed about the plans, programs and activities of the health, physical education, and athletic areas.
PERSONNEL
  • Conducts faculty and staff observations and evaluations in accordance with District needs and expectations.
  • Supervises the performance of all coaches and provides an annual evaluation for each.
  • Ensures the proper certification(s) of all paid and volunteer coaches.
  • Assists the appropriate principal with the recruitment and recommendation for appointment of all coaches.
  • Chairs monthly meetings with all coaches.
  • Designs and implements an annual program of staff development; notably with respect to first aid and student conduct.
MAINTAINING EFFECTIVE RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE COMMUNITY
  • Act as liaison with the Athletic Booster Clubs.
  • Provides for the regular personnel coverage of interscholastic activities.
  • Regularly attends public meetings and school sponsored activities.
  • Maintains effective communication with local and educational and service organizations.
  • Represents the District at league, section state and national meetings in interscholastic athletics.
  • Schedule conferences with parents to help them better understand and assist with the educational, personal, and social adjustment of their children.
  • Is responsible for interpreting the program of interscholastic sports. Provides for the dissemination of appropriate written information to students and the public including general handbooks and newsletter.
BUDGET
  • Develops an annual budget for consideration by the appropriate principal and supervises expenditures to assure that they are consistent with funding.
  • Prepares bids for athletic supplies and equipment.
  • In conjunction with the general responsibility for coordinating the use of all District athletic facilities, this position is responsible for planning, organizing, administering, and coordinating the 7-12 interschool sports program for both boys and girls, including practice schedules, transportation arrangements, use of facilities, game schedules, supervision of athletic events, and the assignment of official (referees, umpires, etc.).
  • Serves as consultant to the Superintendent and Business Office for financial needs of the program and equipment specifications.
  • Prepares and coordinates a system of continuous inventory and inter-building uses of supplies and equipment.
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
  • Serves as a model of effective teaching for others.
  • Pursues professional development through active participation in professional organizations, university-based study.
  • and regular review of the research and literature pertaining to health, physical education, and athletics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.
QUALIFICATIONS
