The Director of Middle Schools will provide leadership for the curriculum and instruction program of the district, grades 6-8. The Director of Middle Schools shall facilitate programs, activities, and systems that support the educational process of students and staff grades 6-8. The Director of Middle Schools reports to the Chief Academic Officer.
Primary Position Responsibilities:
Works with principals and teachers on an on-going basis to analyze student performance and other data to determine student needs in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Initiates studies, research, and planning projects to improve school effectiveness.
Works with principals and teachers to design engaging work for students.
Provides assistance with the development, monitoring, and implementation of required improvement plans.
Works with principals and teachers to ensure curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices and programs are aligned horizontally and vertically to eliminate repetition and redundancy.
Works with principals and teachers to ensure understanding of the depth and complexity of the state curriculum.
Coordinates the review, development and revision of all subject area programs and related curriculum documents and materials, including curriculum guides, course outlines and teaching plans.
Evaluates the middle level curriculum and instruction program effectiveness based on evaluative findings (including student achievement data) and recommend changes as needed.
Develops, recommends, and implements policies and procedures as required to meet curriculum, instruction, and assessment needs and as required by state and federal laws and local policy.
Mentors principals, campus leaders, and campus staff.
Assists with the recruitment, retention, and assignment of campus and central personnel as required.
Communicates openly with all patrons, students, and employees of the district.
Works with and for others to create a culture that supports risk-taking and that provides protection from adverse consequences.
Assists principals and other administrators in their efforts to run efficient and effective schools by serving as a resource person and problem-solver for students, teachers, parents, and community members.
Seeks opportunities for personal professional growth that align with the district's beliefs, vision, and mission.
Assists principals and other administrators in finding opportunities for personal professional growth that aligns with the district's beliefs, vision, and mission.
Provides counsel to the Chief Academic Officer and other central office educators in the design and delivery of professional learning opportunities for district faculty and staff based on identified needs.
Participates fully in the development and implementation of the district's efforts to design a student-centered district.
Attends and is visible at campus, district, and community functions to support the efforts of students, staff, and patrons.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer, Assistant Superintendent, or the Superintendent of Schools.
Plan and provide staff development for teachers, administrators, and staff.
Direct the formulation and revision of curriculum maps, quarterly assessments, and other instructional materials produced for school district purposes.
Coordinate the district's middle level summer school programming with the principals and complete the related district level reporting.
Oversees the implementation of the middle level after school programs.
Provide direct supervision for the systemic Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework for grades 6-8.
Assist teachers and administrators, through consultation, collaboration and coaching, with the implementation of effective instructional strategies and interventions that increase student achievement.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
In-depth knowledge of best practices in Middle-Level curriculum, instruction, and assessment
Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiates instruction based upon student learning styles and behavioral management methods
Ability to evaluate curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs and teaching effectiveness
Experience in planning and presenting staff development for teachers and staff
Experience in master schedule planning
Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Ability to function as a member of a high-performing team
Ability to multi-task
Secondary Position Responsibilities:
Attends Board and District meetings.
Participates in professional networks.
Keeps abreast of best practices and national research.
Performs additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of eight years in education with progressive administrative experience as a principal or district-based staff administrator
Advanced degree in education with an emphasis on curriculum instruction, and/or educational leadership
Current South Carolina Administration Certification (Elementary Principal/Supervisor, Secondary Principal/Supervisor, and/or Superintendent), or eligible for reciprocity
Experience working collaboratively across key departments of a school district
Demonstrated success leading strategic educational initiatives
Proven track record as change agent
Valid South Carolina Driver's License
