Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer or appropriate designee, with the broadest scope for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, organizes, directs, plans, coordinates, and evaluates all nursing services and programs for the respective areas of responsibility.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops, establishes, and implements the philosophy, objectives, policies, and standards of nursing practice in the respective areas of responsibility.
Organize the service or department to delineate authority, functional responsibilities, and lines of communication.
Coordinates functions of nursing services with other disciplines; collaborates with administrative staff, other departmental staff, and representatives of allied groups in planning patient care services.
Participates in the development, planning, and implementation of new programs.
Responsible and accountable for monitoring, evaluating, and developing plans of correction for all aspects of patient care.
Responsible and accountable for setting goals and targets to meet all patient care, staff, departmental, and organizational goals, objectives, and strategic priorities.
Responsible and accountable for ensuring staff have the necessary resources to provide excellent patient care services.
Determines all staffing requirements in relation to patient care standards, and develops procedures to maintain an adequate, competent nursing staff.
Responsible and accountable for executing all staffing plans across the department, including scheduling of overtime and agency personnel to meet patient care needs.
Develop an appropriate recruitment selection process that includes front-line staff.
Implements and evaluates programs to promote recruitment and retention of qualified nursing personnel.
Responsible and accountable for staff engagement to support the strategic priorities of nursing, the department, and the organization.
Ensures staff have the appropriate education and competencies that are relevant to the practice.
Role models and ensure all staff adhere to the ICARE principles of the organization.
Ensures ongoing performance appraisal, competency development, and validation of staff.
Meets with all staff individually on a quarterly basis to provide direct feedback and mentoring.
Set high expectations for all staff, and ensures all staff are accountable and responsible for meeting the needs of the patient, department, and organization.
Responsible and accountable for patient and staff rounding on all patient care units in the department, and ensures staff adhere to patient care rounding on their units.
Monitors, posts, and communicates patient experience data to drive excellence in patient care.
Explains, involves, and instructs patients/families concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.
Partners with labor for all disciplinary actions
Provides counseling to nursing staff regarding adherence to all expectations of their role.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.
