Department Overview

The Director of Patient & Family Services at the Knight Cancer Institute works collaboratively with healthcare professionals, local community representatives, and other stakeholders to oversee all aspects of the Patient & Family Services Program. This includes strategic leadership for oncology social work staff, integrative medicine contractors, oncology volunteers, and related services. The Director is responsible for strategic planning, policy development, and ensuring the program aligns with OHSU's missions of teaching, research, patient care, outreach, and public service.

Function/Duties of Position

Key responsibilities include meeting Commission on Cancer standards for Distress Screening and Survivorship programming, overseeing foundation accounts that support integrative medicine and patient emergency assistance, and developing support programs for patients and families based on identified needs such as lodging and transportation. The Director also serves as a liaison to palliative care, the oncology psychiatric consult service, and the OHSU Foundation.

The Director provides oversight of oncology social work across a range of settings, including Hematology and Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, inpatient oncology units, the Center for Hematologic Malignancies, Neuro-Oncology, the Pediatric Survivorship Clinic, and Community Hematology Oncology Clinics. This includes responsibility for recruitment, hiring, orientation, and professional development of all oncology social workers and support staff.

As an expert resource in psychosocial oncology and Patient & Family Services, the Director ensures that services meet the needs of patients and families while maintaining alignment with the broader goals of OHSU. This role may also involve serving on interdisciplinary committees throughout the institution and engaging with community leaders in the field of oncology care

Required Qualifications

  • Masters of Social Work
  • Ten plus years in social work, 10 years experience in oncology, experience in supervision and demonstrated leadership.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • LCSW
