Position Overview:
The Director of Staffing and Recruitment will provide strategic leadership and oversight of Boston Public Schools' (BPS) staffing and recruitment operations. This key leadership role will oversee a minimum of nine Human Resources Business Partners (HRBPs) who support specific regions of schools across the district, and a minimum of three Recruitment Managers who partner with the HRBPs to ensure schools successfully recruit and hire, high-quality staff. Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership and Vision:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive staffing and recruitment strategy for BPS, ensuring alignment with district goals, priorities, and equity commitments.
- Lead and oversee the work of the HR Business Partners (HRBPs) and Recruitment Managers to create a cohesive and effective recruitment and staffing operation.
- Set clear staffing goals and objectives for each region of schools, guiding HRBPs and Recruitment Managers to meet or exceed recruitment, hiring, and retention targets.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to ensure that staffing strategies meet the diverse needs of the district's schools, and contribute to the overall improvement of student outcomes.
- Lead, mentor, and support the HRBPs and Recruitment Managers in their work, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
- Ensure that HRBPs are fully equipped to support school leaders in developing staffing plans and that Recruitment Managers are equipped to build and implement effective recruitment strategies.
- Conduct regular team meetings and one-on-one check-ins to monitor progress, provide feedback, and guide professional development.
- Establish performance metrics for both the HRBPs and Recruitment Managers to track the success of staffing initiatives and continuously improve performance.
- Collaborate with HRBPs and Recruitment Managers to design and implement recruitment campaigns and strategies that attract diverse, high-quality candidates.
- Partner with HRBPs to ensure effective sourcing, recruitment, interviewing, and hiring processes for all school-based roles.
- Ensure that recruitment strategies are tailored to the unique needs of different schools, regions, and student populations.
- Develop and execute initiatives to build a robust talent pipeline through partnerships with local colleges, universities, community organizations, and professional associations.
- Oversee job fairs, hiring events, and other recruitment activities to ensure BPS attracts top talent.
- Utilize data to identify trends and areas for improvement in recruitment and staffing practices, and make data-driven decisions to refine strategies.
- Regularly assess the district's recruitment and hiring processes, identifying and implementing efficiencies and improvements as needed.
- Develop regular reports on staffing and recruitment metrics, and present findings to senior leadership, including insights on hiring trends, challenges, and successes.
- Ensure that all staffing and recruitment efforts are grounded in principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a commitment to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of the student body.
- Lead initiatives to recruit and hire staff from diverse backgrounds, and develop practices that promote inclusivity and equity in the hiring process.
- Provide training and resources to HRBPs, Recruitment Managers, and school leaders on equitable hiring practices, implicit bias, and fostering inclusive school communities.
- Foster strong relationships with district leaders, school principals, and key internal stakeholders to align staffing strategies with district needs and priorities.
- Work closely with the BPS Leadership Team to ensure seamless communication and collaboration on staffing needs, challenges, and solutions.
- Develop and maintain strong partnerships with external organizations and stakeholders, including local universities, teacher preparation programs, and other community-based organizations.
- Master's degree in Human Resources, Education Administration, Business, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in human resources, staffing, recruitment, or talent management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role managing a large team.
- Demonstrated experience in leading staffing operations in complex organizations, preferably in public education or other large, mission-driven institutions.
- Proven track record in designing and implementing successful recruitment strategies that attract diverse and high-quality candidates.
- In-depth knowledge of recruitment best practices, human resources principles, and legal and regulatory requirements.
- Strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in urban education staffing, with a particular focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Ability to think strategically while also being hands-on in driving day-to-day recruitment operations.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a history of developing, mentoring, and motivating high-performing teams.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Experience in a K-12 public education environment, particularly in urban school districts or large-scale organizations.
- Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS) and other HR technologies.
- Expertise in data analytics and using data to drive decisions and improve recruitment processes.
- Fluency in multiple languages spoken within the BPS community is a plus.
- Leadership: Strong leadership capabilities, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and manage a large, diverse team toward shared goals.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop and execute long-term, sustainable strategies while maintaining focus on day-to-day operations.

- Full-time, in-person position based in Boston, MA.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required during peak recruitment periods or for special events.
