POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Student Engagement leads and manages student engagement programs that align with the college's values, promoting student success and retention. This position oversees campus life, new student onboarding, orientation, student activities, and leadership development through various programs and services. The Director provides vision and leadership for the development, assessment, and oversight of these initiatives, including campus events, workshops, student government, and leadership opportunities. Collaboration with academic and administrative departments is essential to enhance the student experience through involvement and learning. The Director ensures compliance with internal, federal, and Department of Education policies, including FERPA.

This role is based in Pasadena and reports to the Dean of Students.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
  • General Supervision: The incumbent normally receives little instruction on day-to-day work and receives general instructions on new assignments.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
  • Supervisory responsibilities within a department or functional area. Responsibilities include coordinating, directing and assigning work and may also include participation in interviewing and selecting staff, evaluating employee performance including making recommendations regarding pay, performance, and disciplinary action.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:

The Director of Student Engagement provides leadership and accountability for college-wide events and activities which ensure the delivery of quality and effective programs to enhance and support the academic success of students and their experience.

Leadership & Management
  • Lead and manage college-wide events and activities, ensuring the delivery of effective programs that support student academic success and overall experience.
  • Plan and set long-term goals for the Office of Student Engagement.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations for student orientation programs, Student Government Association, and the distribution of the student government and campus activities budgets.


Program Development & Oversight
  • Develop, interpret, and administer the Office of Student Engagement (OSE) programs and functions.
  • Design and assess a comprehensive student activities program encompassing educational, recreational, social, and cultural events.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the college's annual Commencement ceremony.


Collaboration & Communication
  • Work closely with administrative and academic departments to create, implement, and assess programs designed to enhance student experience through involvement, learning, and leadership opportunities.
  • Participate in developing marketing strategies on a variety of platforms to promote campus activities and maximize student engagement.
  • Chair or participate in standing and ad-hoc committees as assigned.


Student Success & Retention
  • Monitor student retention and satisfaction using data from college databases, surveys, and polls.
  • Develop strategies to enhance student engagement and foster a positive campus environment.


Other Duties as Assigned
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students or other college leadership to support the broader goals of the institution.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • KNOWLEDGE:
    • In-depth knowledge of the FERPA Regulation.
  • SKILLS:
    • Judgment & Decision-Making:
      • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions by using critical thinking skills to resolve complex student problems.
    • Collaboration & Communication:
      • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with students of varying educational levels and employees at all levels of the organization.
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including oral presentation, public speaking, and written communication.
      • PREFERRED: Bilingual in Spanish, with the ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish.
    • Technical Proficiency & Clerical Skills:
      • Excellent PC skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and proficiency in other clerical tasks (phone skills, typing, filing).
      • Ability to quickly learn and utilize school technology platforms.
    • Organizational & Planning Skills:
      • Excellent aptitude in personal planning and organizational skills, aligned with personal accountability and responsibility.
  • ABILITIES:
    • Flexibility & Time Management:
      • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
      • Demonstrated experience/ability to positively function in a complex, fast-paced team environment and meet multiple deadlines.
    • Experience with Specific Populations:
      • Experience working with adult learners.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education:
    • Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or equivalent years of experience.
    • Preferred: Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience:
    • Required:
      • Minimum of 7 years' experience in higher education, of which:
        • At least 5 years in an academic-related and/or student services and
        • 2 years in a high-contact customer service or support environment.

DECISION MAKING:

The position is governed by the policies of Pacific Oaks, along with established procedures for the department. Independent judgment is required in the supervision of personnel as well as in the carrying out of the department's strategic goals and budget management.

CONTACT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Routine exchange or presentation of information.

Responsible for demonstrating professionalism and leadership in resolving conflicts with students and employees. Recommends alternative approaches to solve problems and conflicts.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

This position does not require the management of budgets, but it is required to follow Pacific Oaks policies for purchasing and budget approvals.
