Position Duties
Provides leadership to achieve the University's comprehensive sustainability goals, including advancing Loyola's climate action efforts and greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. The Director works closely with their supervisor, executive leadership, students, faculty, and staff to advance sustainability in all aspects of the campus including academic programs, campus planning, facilities operations, co-curricular student opportunities and other areas as needed to support University sustainability efforts.
Essential Functions
Sustainability Performance:
1. Advance the University's Sustainability Tracking Assessment & Rating System (STARS) rating to support the Strategic Plan goal, "STARS Platinum rating by 2030". Works to support the University to facilitate sustainability-related efforts. 2. Establish sustainability goals and priorities and track the University's progress toward established energy and carbon emission reduction goals as outlined in the Climate Action Plan. Revise and make recommendations for additional goals to advance the University's efforts. 3. Lead sustainability initiatives by providing research, information and assistance to campus departments, and student organizations in development and implementation. 4. Advance sustainability programs and initiatives such as recycling and composting, Green Office, Good Stuff Campaign, St. Francis Feast, etc. 5. Track university data related to sustainability, including waste, water, fuel and energy. Prepare reports and develop and maintain tools, metrics and indicators for assessing progress towards sustainability goals. Compile annual reports. Monitor and report progress of sustainability goals highlighted in the University's Climate Action Plan.
Collaborative Programming:
1. Lead the Office of Sustainability. This role advocates for sustainability activities and decision-making across diverse units, manages staff, oversees fiscal operations of the sustainability office. 2. Work with all aspects of the residential and academic campus community, including students, faculty, and staff to promote an understanding and awareness of sustainability issues. Coordinate informational trainings and presentations, promote energy and water conservation, waste minimization, recycling, sustainable buildings and landscape design, the arboretum, alternative transportation, procurement of green products, etc. 3. Support and foster student leadership and engagement in sustainability initiatives. 4. Evaluate and advance sustainability initiatives from multiple perspectives--return on investment; progress on the Climate Action Plan; and impact on campus and campus community. 5. Work with vendors to manage the information provided for greenhouse gas reporting and benchmarking. 6. Supervise sustainability team members, including professional staff, graduate assistants, sustainability fellows, student workers, student volunteers, etc. Supervisory responsibilities include providing direction, leadership, mentoring, and oversight for the office, which includes hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of at least one professional staff member and both direct and indirect supervision of all other team members. Conducts regular meetings with each direct report, assess and monitor progress, and creates a cohesive team that effectively administers the office's operations and initiatives.
Engagement:
1. Engage the Loyola community to develop and implement a dynamic sustainability program guided by the recommendations in the Climate Action Plan with short and longrange implementation strategies and programs. 2. Develop educational programs to advance sustainability as a core value across campus, including generating content for communication initiatives and managing the sustainability website, social media and events. 3. Present program reviews and updates to University constituents. 4. Co-chair the Sustainability Committee (a committee of the Loyola Conference) with a broad campus representation. 5. Manage and advance engagement programs as a means for integrating sustainability as part of the Loyola community and as a part of our larger community in Baltimore City and Maryland. 6. Develop shared goals with connections to other campus priorities and initiatives including integral ecology and diversity, equity and inclusion. Foster a welcoming, affirming and diverse environment. 7. Represent the University at local, regional and national sustainability organizations such as the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), and Baltimore Colleges and Universities for a Sustainable Environment (B'CAUSE). 8. Network with peer institutions to understand the evolving best practices and look for opportunities for collaboration to forward common goals. 9. Build effective partnerships with external organizations to support sustainability efforts.

Minimum 8 years professional experience with demonstrated progressive experience related to sustainability, and minimum 3 years of supervisory experience. Demonstrated knowledge of all dimensions of sustainability (energy, environment, economic, equity, issues, trends, and best practices).
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong ability to work as part of a team as well as to work independently on a wide variety of projects. Demonstrated ability to develop positive collaborative relationships and experience in facilitation of collaborative processes to achieve a consensus outcomes. Experience developing long-term strategic initiatives and in implementing, assessing and engaging communities in them. Experience with identifying funding sources (e.g. grants, fundraising initiatives) and working with others to secure that funding. Established track record in working with Advancement to advocate for sustainability initiatives with donors. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent projects, and demonstrate effective time management skills. Demonstrated adaptability and initiative, including a willingness to seek and integrate information from multiple sources, and to take initiative to anticipate programmatic needs. Sound judgment in decision-making and ability to think strategically. Demonstrated ability to develop and promote inclusive programs that engage all members of the community. Exceptional oral and written communication skills with experience communicating with multiple diverse audiences. Strong human relations and interpersonal skills including an ability to interact professionally and communicate in a clear and courteous manner with a diverse community in order to maintain effective, professional, and cooperative working relationships across all levels on campus and with external audiences. Proficiency in database and web site development, and the Microsoft Office and Google suites
