Director of Department of Transportation
Leading the planning, development, and implementation of strategies and initiatives to improve transportation services and operations. They will develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, transportation providers, and regulatory agencies. Must ensure that transportation services meet all requirements, are cost-effective, and are in compliance with all applicable regulations. The Director will coordinate with other departments, such as maintenance and safety, to ensure smooth operations. Requires exceptional management, organizational, and communication skills, as well as a strong understanding of the regulations and laws related to transportation operations. Oversee and coordinate the transportation department, transportation planning, traffic engineering, and maintenance divisions. Responsible for planning and coordinating federal, local, and state transportation projects. Deliver leading transportation system, serving Louisville through safe, efficient, sustainable and equitable movement. Develops an annual report showcasing progress and informing the community of accomplishments and challenges, creating transparency and accountability, and allowing for course correction as needed.

Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to direct the daily operation of the department and plan and develops new procedures, formulates policy and prepares budgetary data.

This class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.
Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
Coordinates programs, projects, and activities to achieve short- and long-range goals and objectives of the strategic plan.
Plans expenditures for budget preparation.
Determines departmental policies and planning long term programs.
Compiles reports and statistics and ensures compliance with local, state, and federal laws and guidelines.
Prepares memoranda and non-routine correspondence.
Plans, guides and directs the research, analysis and preparation of specialized or technical reports in assigned areas of responsibility.
Conveys assignments to various organizational units.
Responds to complaints and inquiries from the public and resolves problems and concerns.
Represents the department to the public.
Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline.
Eight (8) years of relevant experience of which two (2) must have been in an administrative or supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
