AtWestern State Hospital, we're looking for an Registered Nurse 3 to join the Quality Department at theCivil Center, where youll play a crucial role in enhancing patient care standards and mitigating risk across our departments.
At the Civil Center, you'll providenursing to patients experiencing acute psychiatric illnesses, physical illnesses, and/or unsafe behavioral concerns.As part of this specialized team, youll conduct comprehensive reviews, assess potential risks, and recommend improvements to hospital leadership to advance patient safety and maintain compliance.
In this role, you'll provide crucial insights on complex safety issues and collaborate directly with clinical staff, treatment teams, and patients to understand and address potential hazards. From assessing equipment for safety to identifying causes behind injuries, youll ensure that every incident is handled with thoroughness, empathy, and accountability. Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. Pierce County employees receive a free Orca card for transportation use.
Some of what you'll do:
- Conduct hospital-wide Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) and Clinical Risk Management (CRM) reviews.
- Analyze and interpret clinical data to track, trend, and report patient safety and quality outcomes.
- Collaborate with leadership on assessments of safety risks, review of serious events, and identify systemic improvements.
- Co-lead Root Cause Analyses for Sentinel Events and adverse events, providing expertise on clinical risks and preventative measures.
- Engage directly with patients, treatment teams, and staff to discuss events and review findings.
- Review assessment and documentation of injuries, including those of unknown origin, and incidents of alleged abuse, neglect, or serious injuries from self-harm or assault.
- Serve as a clinical resource for staff, guiding them on best practices for patient safety and regulatory standards.
- Coordinate with the Risk Management and Investigations Departments to ensure compliance with CMS and other regulatory bodies.
- Report to Executive Leadership on safety incidents, patient care concerns, and risk mitigation strategies.
Who should apply?
Professionals with possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington and graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing;
AND
Two years of professional nursing experience;
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
Additional skills, knowledge and abilities we are looking for:
- At least six months experience with Root Cause Analysis processes.
- The ability to Identify potential Sentinel Event occurrences in accordance with The Joint Commission (TJC) and Western State Hospital policies.
- Experienced with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and TJC standards and accreditation process.
- Can demonstrate appropriate, proficient and knowledgeable report and policy writing skills and experience with project development.
- Psychiatric nursing experience is preferred but not required.
- Preferred ANCC certification in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing.
- Strong critical observation and assessment skills. Expertise in examining patient surroundings, equipment, and incident factors with attention to detail.
- Patient-centered. Compassionate and thorough in addressing patient care concerns, particularly in sensitive situations.
- Strong communication abilities: Able to clearly convey findings and recommendations to patients, treatment teams, and leadership.
- Investigation and documentation proficiency: Skillful in reviewing patient records, analyzing circumstances, and documenting complex incidents.
