Selected candidate will work under the general supervision of the Deputy General Counsel. The selected candidate will be a lawyer who can operate independently to handle legal and policy issues related to the Bank's work while working collaboratively with other lawyers within LEGIA and LEG as a whole.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

The position requires demonstrated technical depth, ability to apply rigorous analytical skills, to work harmoniously in a team, and to exercise good judgment on complex projects. The level and quality of these skills will be a determining factor in the selection for the position, and references will be given consideration in this determination.
The selected candidate will be expected to maintain good client relations and the incumbent will be expected to demonstrate a proven ability to resolve differences across boundaries, find common ground, and understand the needs and concerns not only of the World Bank as an institution but also of the various units within the Bank, as well as of third parties.
The selected candidate will function as a principal legal advisor to one or more assigned internal World Bank clients. The selected candidate will be expected to be versatile, handline any number of issues covered by the unit. In particular, the selected candidate may handle one or more of the following areas of responsibility:
Advise on complex matters regarding the governance of the various organs of the World Bank's governing bodies
Advise on complex matters arising in the sanctions system
Draft and revise pleadings and submissions to the Bank's Administrative Tribunal.
Draft and negotiate establishment agreements, host country agreements between the World Bank Group entities and government counterparts.
Manage national court litigation and commercial arbitration.
Identify and address sources of legal risk in the Bank's corporate and operational policies, including coordinating policy reforms to mitigate risk.
Handle independently and professionally a diverse variety of other projects, as necessary, relating to transactions, policy issues, and miscellaneous matters coming to the unit, as requested by the supervising Deputy General Counsel.
Selection Criteria
The selected candidate will work under the general supervision of the Deputy General Counsel, with day-to-day guidance provided by one or more Lead or Senior Counsels working in the same practice specialties.
An LLM degree, J.D. or equivalent, with a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience and be admitted/qualified to practice law in at least one jurisdiction.
Expertise or familiarity in public international law and governance matters.
Legal transactional or litigation experience.
Ability to work collaboratively, to build trust among peers and colleagues, to respond quickly and consistently to key issues.
Demonstrated intellectual leadership and ability to integrate knowledge with broader strategic, policy and operational objectives.
High degree of persuasiveness and diplomacy to generate consensus, especially on divisive legal issues.
Language skills. Fluency in English, both written and oral, is required, with additional fluency in French, Spanish, Arabic, and/or Portuguese desirable.
