Position Title: Elementary School Principals (Central Elementary; Lincoln Elementary)

The primary function of the Elementary School Principal is to serve as the school and educational leader responsible for development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of a comprehensive program of educational and student services. The Principal administers the program in accordance with board policies, statutory requirements, administrative rules and regulations, and consistent with collective bargaining agreements and the District's mission and vision. The Principal also serves as an advocate for the staff, school, and school community as appropriate.

Qualifications:
  • Masters Degree, including all courses needed to meet and maintain credential requirements.
  • An appropriate, valid, State of Michigan Teaching Certificate is required.
  • An appropriate, valid, State of Michigan Administrator Certificate is required.
  • A minimum of five (5) successful years of teaching experience.
  • Prior experience as an elementary building administrator preferred.
  • Ability to create a safe, orderly, positive school climate for students and staff.
  • Ability to foster growth, creativity, and flexibility using a variety of techniques.
  • Ability to facilitate resolution of complex interpersonal issues.
  • Demonstrate successful experience in shared decision making, program development, staff supervision, and evaluation.

  • Knowledge and demonstrative skills in the use of technology for teaching and learning.

  • Knowledge about laws, rules, and regulations governing the operation of public schools, including school reform legislation.
  • Knowledge of innovations in education; alternative instructional strategies, alternative assessment methods; blended instructional support; in-class support for special needs students; instruction based on student performance and decision making, peer tutoring, cooperative learning.
  • Ability to react in emergency situations to include intervening and, as necessary, consistent with District policy, restraining students.
  • Appearance, grooming and personality that establish a positive example for students, staff, and the school community.
  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently, verbally and in writing. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general education periodicals, professional journals, teaching procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write business correspondence and syllabi. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of directors, teachers, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Work well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focus on solving conflict; maintain confidentiality; listen to others without interrupting; keep emotions under control; remain open to others' ideas and contribute to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrate ability to successfully work with adolescent students. Ability to lead and motivate staff and communicate effectively with students, staff, and community.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve routine problems with minimal supervisory assistance. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, with staff and with the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness and consistency to the mission and goals established by the Board of Education.
  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e-mail, internet software and word processing software.

Report to/Evaluated by: The Elementary School Principal is under the immediate supervision of the Superintendent.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position supervises the Student Services Coordinator, Teachers, Custodians, and all Support Staff. All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment at all times.

Salary Range: $83,000-$97,000; Salary dependent upon education level and experience.

Essential Duties
  • Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policy(ies) and procedures.
  • Administers the school and its instructional program in all its facets.
  • Implements Board policies and administrative regulations.
  • Supervises the school staff, providing assistance, as necessary.
  • Assists in the recruiting, screening, training, hiring and assigning of school staff.
  • Effectively manages conflict within the school building.
  • Creates and implements school's master curriculum schedule.
  • Organizes and attends all staff meetings.
  • Participates in IEP and 504 meetings as necessary or required.
  • Attends and represents the District at civic and executive board meetings and participates on various school committees to address student and school needs.
  • Writes and presents reports at school Board meetings.
  • Plans and implements appropriate professional development.
  • Prepares and submits annual building budget within District guidelines and ensures compliance with program requirements.
  • Implement District disciplinary policy and procedures related to student behavior and achievement.
  • Supervises and monitors student activities daily and attends student activities after school hours.
  • Informs the District office about activities in the school and forwards required reports to the District.
  • Develops, plans and implements school site programs and activities in accordance with the goals and objectives of the school.
  • Develop and implement a plan to administer all required student testing.
  • Observes monitors and evaluates school staff performance as outlined in District policy.
  • Exercises decisive leadership in all situations.
  • Participates in proactive resolution of students and staff concerns and/or challenges.
  • Assumes responsibility for a safe and orderly environment.
  • Prepares and presents reports, letters, memos, and other necessary correspondence to students, staff and the community regarding school systems and policies.
  • Develops the master schedule and complies with accreditation guidelines and state requirements.
  • Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
  • Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff and students.
  • Provides staff assistance to the Superintendent and organizes various committees necessary in addressing school needs.
  • Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours, as required.
  • Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.
  • Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature apparent or as assigned.
  • Takes in-service training as provided.
  • Must be self-directed and have the ability to follow directives from supervisors.
  • Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Regular in-person attendance and punctuality are expectations of this position.
