Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey's Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Vale Health, Safety, and Risk Team is a vital part of the VNL Operations. Together, we monitor, check, and continually improve our health and safety systems to create an environment where we can all successfully achieve zero harm and go HomeSafe.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Employee Health Specialist to join our Health, Safety, and Risk Department in St. John's, NL. This permanent position will be a Monday to Friday schedule working at the St. John's Corporate Office in St. John's, NL with regular travel to both Long Harbour and Voisey's Bay as required.

As an Employee Health Specialist, you will a member of Vale's Health, Safety, and Risk team reporting to the HSR Manager. In this role, you will support employees who are missing or performing modified work duties due to a health issue by connecting them with appropriate resources and facilitate their return to work. Duties will include ensuring appropriate classification and reporting (internal and external) of injuries. Other duties include the promotion of health and wellness within the Vale Newfoundland and Labrador (VNL) Operations by interacting directly with site personnel and advising on health and wellness programs such as mental health, fatigue, medicals & medical surveillance, disability management, worker's compensation, and Drug & Alcohol Program administration.

Additionally, in this position you will:
  • Re-evaluate and revamp a VNL Disability Management Program. Proactively establish and execute early and safe return to work plans with Site Management, monitor trends in disability claims and recommend proactive measures to reduce workplace injuries to VNL leadership. Ensure all legal and legislative requirements are met as per the appropriate compensation board's standards. Administer program and act as lead on program.
  • Manage worker's compensation cases and maintain strong relationships with Workplace NL and medical providers.
  • Act as the Program Administrator and provide oversight of VNL's Drug and Alcohol Program.
  • Lead an initiative to establish and administer Physical Demands Analyses (PDAs) for roles within VNL.
  • Review and maintain VNL pre-employment and periodical medical Policy for alignment with Vale North Atlantic and industry best practice.
  • Work closely with site HSR team members, medical service provider contractors and Human Resource Business Partners.
  • Monitor health data and identify trends to determine areas of focus for VNL leadership that will emphasize the right work to promote health and wellness of all employees.
  • Regularly travel to VNL sites to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, provide support to our operational team by participating in risk assessments, providing health/wellness sessions, and assisting as other needs arise.
  • Identify ways to firmly establish mental health as part of the business routines.
  • Advise on fatigue management best practices through monitoring trends, reviewing industry best practices and provide recommendations for improvements/advancements to programs. Once a program is established, act as owner.


About You

Education:
  • Bachelor of Nursing Degree or a Registered Nurse License is required.
  • Certification in Occupational Health, Wellness, Disability Management, or other general Health Profession would be an asset.

Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in nursing is required.

Skills:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in injury and disability management, as well as, provide technical expertise and consultative services to management.
  • Possess a strong work ethic with effective problem-solving, communication (listening, oral and written), decision making and analytical skills.
  • Be an effective team player who excels at building trusting relationships with clients and coworkers but also able to work independently.
  • Possess knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations in the occupational health and safety and human resources fields is required.
  • Excellent computer skills - Word, Excel & Power Point, Adobe.
  • Experience with SAP.
  • Provide effective Wellness sessions.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to achieve goals related to program.
  • Support Strategic priorities that relate to health, wellness, and disability management.
