Why does the job exist?

The primary purpose of this position recommendations for repair of bridges and structures within District One to promote safe efficient roadways and reductions of vehicle crashes. Provide inspection and documentation of the condition of public bridges.

How does it get done?

Oversees and directs bridge repair crew operations, ensuring efficient and effective execution.

Supervises the Bridge Inspection Crew providing guidance and support.

Crafts a comprehensive three-year bridge rehabilitation program, leveraging Contract Maintenance Road Betterment (CMRB), federal and state funding, district field supplies, and district bridge repair crew resources.

Establishes Statewide Purchasing Agreements (SPA) and collaborates on design book projects with the District Technical Support Section for district-wide bridge rehabilitation initiatives.

Coordinates with NMDOT General Office and FHWA bridge engineers to set priorities for construction and maintenance activities related to bridge repairs and replacements.

Facilitates the coordination and contract management of the NMSU bridge inspection contract.

Manages responses to engineering and route survey (bridge inventory) information requests from local governments, federal agencies, and other departmental groups.

Develops detailed plans and specifications for assigned engineering-related design projects.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess the following experience:

Proficient in performing a range of computer operations from basic to advanced, including CAD, GIC, BOS, and electronic database management.

Experienced in conducting comprehensive bridge and structure inspections.

Skilled in reviewing, analyzing, and verifying project information, including cost estimates, project construction quantities, utility installations/relocations, and as-built roadway plans.

Capable of writing detailed technical reports and policy documents.

Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and individuals.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and eight (8) years of engineering experience, four (4) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer and (2) years of experience in a supervisory/managerial role. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements

Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain or the ability to be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Working Conditions

Work is performed both in an office setting and, in the field, with occasional extended hours and holidays if needed. The position involves exposure to various environmental conditions, including inclement weather, uneven terrain, heights, heavy traffic, noise, and chemicals. It requires occasional travel with possible overnight stays, attending meetings, planning and conducting field inspections, and visiting construction sites where heavy equipment may be operating. Prolonged periods of computer work, including typing, data entry, and reviewing plans and files, are necessary, along with moderate lifting of files up to 20 lbs.
