The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Pavement Management and Design Bureau provides support to districts staff and project development engineer in roadway pavement design thickness and recommendation in pavement treatment based on pavement road conditions.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for providing materials and pavement related technical expertise to the NMDOT including three (3) design groups and six (6) Districts.
This position is responsible for conducting engineering analyses of project conditions (traffic, geographic location, environment, and materials); develop flexible and rigid pavement recommendations for NMDOT reconstruction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects; responsible for attending project level design meetings and continued communication with NMDOT and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); responsible for plan review meetings and field construction visits that require recommendations from a professionally licensed engineer.
How does it get done?
Develop and/or review flexible and rigid pavement recommendations for districts and design regions for reconstruction, rehabilitation and maintenance projects.
Provide advanced technical expertise and training pertaining to design and materials-related pavement design applications.
Manage projects to ensure field and laboratory schedules are met to provide preliminary and final pavement section recommendations in a timely manner.
Use Pavement Management System (PMS) to develop Pavement Condition Assessment Reports.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have preferred experience/education in the following areas:
Pavement design methods, mix design, and roadway construction materials.
Pavement management system experience, pavement condition evaluation and pavement treatment.
Experience in managing contracts.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
