JOB DESCRIPTION
The Manager for the Engineered Systems team is part of the Global Operating Systems, Storage & Compute group within the Infrastructure & Operations organization. The incumbent is responsible for managing the Engineered Systems portfolio consisting of Exadata, Exalogic, Exalytics, ZFS appliances, and Cloud@Customer enterprise infrastructure platforms. In addition to performing managerial duties, the role includes responsibility for project deliverables and global operations covering 24*7 support and handling escalations.
The incumbent will work with Infrastructure teams, DBA, Middleware Administration, and application groups to ensure that usage of Oracle is always optimal and that the available tools and technologies are identified and used appropriately
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
Strategy & Planning
Develop strategies for increasing ROI to optimize the Engineered Systems platform.
Establish processes and standards for capacity and scalability planning efforts.
Establish processes and standards for lifecycle management of engineered systems platform components.
Ensure Corporate Information Security and Departmental security policies and guidelines are adhered to.
Foster a culture of collaboration and innovation and be a 'Change Agent'. Identify and drive automation opportunities.
Guide the database and middleware delivery teams for effective platform migration strategies to engineered systems.
Lead the team in the design, engineering, configuration, operation, and maintenance of secure and scalable enterprise hardware and software infrastructure.
Determine staffing and skills requirements.
Develop strategic partnerships with vendors and participate in Quarterly Business Review meetings.
Acquisition & Deployment
Utilize governance processes to prioritize and define work to be accomplished.
Compile and recommend wants/needs for the annual budgeting process in I&O and prepare presentation to senior IT management.
Work closely with infrastructure, application, DMW Technical teams, and project sponsors to make sure technology solutions meet business objectives.
Review project requests describing infrastructure needs to estimate time and effort involved to successfully accomplish a project.
Plan, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard information against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification, or disclosure.
Lead server hardware/software life cycle management.
Operational Management
Develop and maintain understanding of key processes, schedules, cycles, profiles, etc. for the technical systems in use by a customer.
Mentor the team in the installation and configuration standards for Engineered Systems and applications deployed on this platform.
Organize, plan, coordinate, and schedule maintenance and life cycle activities.
Guide troubleshooting efforts to resolve issues affecting enterprise hardware and software platform and infrastructure.
Provide regular, clear, and consistent communication (written and oral) on the status of projects, issues, and deliverables to representatives from customers, peers, and vendors.
Conduct and/or facilitate knowledge transfer sessions for technical development.
Conduct activities like staffing, performance, and resource management.
Set employee objectives, monitor, and evaluate performance, and provide feedback and mentoring.
Create and maintain development plans for each team member, including training, skills assessment, career planning, and goal planning.
Manage personal growth objectives for the team in conjunction with Career Development Office
Manage, develop, and mentor subordinates toward the building of a strong team.
Mentor team members in incident and problem resolution best practices. Handle escalations for production issues.
Facilitate discussions with the team and vendor technical support to accelerate analysis and resolution of technical issues.
Incidental Functions
Lead the monitoring strategy in alignment with existing monitoring tools to effectively monitor all the technical components of Engineered Systems platform.
Gain knowledge of the technology workspace in terms of current state, future possibilities, forthcoming technologies, and their relevance and impact.
Engage in Proof-of-Value scoping in the evaluation of new technologies and present findings to Management.
Provide guidance / assist with various projects as may be required to contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the work.
Assist in performance tuning and monitoring of all system stacks.
Coordinate and assist with disaster planning/mitigation/recovery.
Participate in hiring activities and fulfilling affirmative action obligations and ensuring compliance with the equal employment opportunity.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education & Certification
Bachelor's Degree (or foreign equivalent) or in lieu of a degree, at least 12 years in experience in the field of Information Technology or Business (work experience or a combination of education and work experience in the field of Information Technology or Business).
Knowledge & Experience
8+ years of IT and/or business experience.
Supervisory experience or team responsibility preferred.
Understand the IT processes of Incident Management, Problem Management, Change Management, and Configuration Management.
Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
Experience in developing documentation and presenting solutions to management and teams.
Experience leading projects.
Skilled at organizing, planning, and communicating.
Preferred Knowledge & Skills
Experience with any of Oracle engineered systems (Exadata, Exalogic, Exalytics, PCA etc.)
Experience in handling Converged Infrastructure platforms (compute, network, and storage)
Experience in UNIX/Linux System Administration.
Expert Knowledge of hardware platforms, networking, storage, and subsystems.
Knowledge in DevOps technologies, strategies, tools, and practices.
Knowledge in Cloud technologies (IaaS, SaaS, and PaaS)
Strong knowledge of Linux Operating system and virtualization technologies
Experience with Installation/Upgrade/Patching of server hardware and platform software.
Experience with backup/recovery design, DR implementation, monitoring implementation, performance tuning and optimization.
Experience supporting applications or infrastructure in a cloud environment.
Experience in server hardening and security standards for audit compliance.
Good understanding of fundamental technologies like TCP/IP, HTTP(S), SSL, FTP, VSFTP, SMTP, DNS, Load balancer, NFSv3, NFSv4, LDAP.
Experience with supporting platforms running Oracle Clusterware/RAC databases with ASM or fusion middleware technologies.
Experience in WebLogic application server or equivalent (WebSphere or Jboss).
Experience with installing, configuring Oracle Virtual Machines, managing OVM templates.
