POSITION SUMMARY

As an integral part of a team, the Chief Engineer is responsible for continuously looking for ways to improve each guest's experience from providing exceptional guest service to being responsible for all aspects of the Engineering department. To include the proper operation, maintenance and repair of all heating, ventilation, refrigeration, mechanical equipment, and furniture, etc. for the comfort of our guests and employees. Develop, coordinate and monitor the property's Preventive Maintenance Program to ensure the safety and comfort of staff and guests. Oversee the Engineering Department, including managing training Engineering staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manages the physical plant including all equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water, pool, electrical and life safety systems. Ensure that systems and equipment operate at an optimum level and safely, effectively and efficiently.
  • Administrator for engineering operational related software applications, including but not limited to: DayForce (payroll/leave of absence, CMMS desktop and mobile, Saflok (guestroom electronic lock system), Inncom (guestroom A/C and lighting controls), Alerton EMS (non-guestroom major equipment and lighting controls), Key control system, Lock/Key Records, Inventory System, etc.
  • Provide and ensure necessary training to engineers and staff on all engineering operational related software applications, as well as Halepuna general software applications, such as HMS (PMS), DayForce (Payroll), etc. are effective.
  • Maintain Engineering inventory, through supervision of established protocols and standardization of operational procedures
  • Assist with major projects' research and planning, prepare analysis or assessment report, prepare approval request, and assist with implementation.
  • Plan and assist with annual capital and expenses/payroll budgeting process to include justification to Director of Engineering.
  • Maintain monthly and annual expenses review and variance control, report monthly expenses to the Director of Engineering.
  • Provide various reports for senior management routinely and upon request, such as financial reporting and analysis and forecasting in monitoring and communicating departmental or project specific budgets, forecasts, and actual costs.
  • Record keeper and organizer for hotel key control procedure development and key records.
  • Ensure maintained cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of work areas to be inspected ready. Ensure safety of work area.
  • Ensure consistent and correct maintenance and use of equipment.
  • Anticipate guests' needs, respond and resolve guest concerns/complaints promptly, and acknowledge all guests, however busy and at any time of day, to always maintain positive guest relations.
  • Develop and implement a preventive maintenance program of all-building equipment and guestrooms, including the training of the Engineering staff on the adherence and requirements of program.
  • Purchase necessary parts, supplies, tools and equipment related to Engineering, through direct contact with sales representatives.
  • Ensure the proper operation, maintenance and repair of all the facility equipment
  • Conduct a once-a-month formal training program on the required job functions with criterion expected and department orientation with new hires. Conduct ongoing training with existing staff.
  • Administration and enforce required regulatory employment training including safety practices and fire drills ensure compliance with governmental and safety regulations
  • Prepare and adjust weekly work schedules in accordance with staffing guidelines and labor forecasts.
  • Authorize requests for vacation/sick leave, holidays for staff members, and leaves of absences, schedule changes, overtime, salary increases/reductions, purchase requests and expenditures.
  • Monitor staff performance in all phases of job functions ensuring that all procedures are carried out to departmental standards; rectify any deficiencies with respective personnel.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching and regular feedback to help manage conflict and improve staff members' performance.
  • Completes and conducts performance appraisals with the engineering staff.
  • Investigate accidents and make corrective actions to prevent injuries and compile report.
  • Attend and participate in the hotel's Safety Committee and ensure appropriate and timely follow-up of items that need to be corrected.
  • Routinely report to the Engineering Director on team performance and functionality of the Hotel
  • Perform all other duties as may be required or assigned by the Director of Engineering.


SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS

Reports To: Director of Engineering

Supervises: Engineering Staff

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent vocational training certificate.
  • 6 years' experience working in mechanical trades.
  • Previous hospitality experience of 4 years
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a supervisory/management role in a facilities engineering environment.
  • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to meet the minimum qualifications to perform the essential functions of this position


LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Certification in CPR.
  • Certification in First Aid/AED.
  • Certification in various trades highly preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Ability to anticipate guest needs; respond promptly and acknowledge all guests.
  • Demonstrates professional, interpersonal skills with various levels of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain complete knowledge of and comply with all departmental policies/service procedures/standards.
  • Proficiency in English reading and writing; basic mathematical calculations; working knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented and have the ability to multi-task.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Plumbing codes
    • Building codes
    • Electrical codes
    • National/local fire codes
    • Local mechanical codes
    • Water treatment program
    • Blueprints and plumbing and wiring schematics
    • Power and hand tools, meters, etc. as it relates to the technical trades
  • Working knowledge of all mechanical equipment critical to the operation of the building.
  • Ability to trouble shoot and use alternative(s) in emergency situations.
  • Ability to instruct/direct staff in the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Ensure familiarity with all hotel services/features and local attractions and activities to respond to guest inquiries accurately.
