The Engineering, Managing Principal functions under the direction and oversight of a more senior Department Engineering Manager, in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards, and has full responsibility for directing and monitoring project work within a technical unit or area of a larger engineering department. Leads in their area of specialization and assigns work according to priority. Acts as technical resources and mentor to principal, senior and entry to mid-level engineers in area of responsibility. Responsible for day-to-day activities, including the maintenance of the quality, content, consistency and continuity of all technical work performed in an assigned technical unit or area.

As part of the ABS team, you will be working within an organization with several plan approval centers located across the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

You will work on a variety of newly built and existing ship projects both within the marine and the offshore sector as part of a medium-sized team of experienced engineers. The work will involve both plan review and assistance to clients and surveyors on technical queries related to vessel structure, stability, load line, tonnage, fire protection and safety.

What You Will Do:
  • Monitors the delivery and quality of technical services to customers' satisfaction.
  • Prepares annual performance appraisals. Evaluates and communicates individual performance appraisal issues with staff members under his/her direct supervision and recommends compensation adjustments and advancements to senior management.
  • Identifies training needs and determines appropriate training programs for developing the potential of subordinate and engineering staff members.
  • Plans and monitors ABS mandatory, required and other training needs of subordinate staff members.
  • May serve as account manager on technical projects for designated customers and actively promotes the services of ABS to clients.
  • May serve on technical or industry committees and may represent the company as a spokesperson at industry conferences or meetings.
  • Performs work which involves conventional engineering practices but may include moderately complex problems such as the resolution of conflicting design requirements, material standards or coordination of activities among other disciplines.
  • Ensures that assigned engineering positions are adequately staffed with qualified and competent engineering personnel capable of carrying out assigned technical projects in accordance with established policies, procedures and technical standards.
  • Maintains active awareness of business and management developments affecting present and potential customers.
  • Manage individual and team performance, training, coaching, and development to meet current and long long-term rational and business needs to, including succession.
  • Meet or exceed company key performance metrics and goals associated with organizational business metrics.
  • Proposes new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures or designs.
  • Interacts with clients to identify and resolve problems in the area of technical expertise.
  • Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.
  • You will perform work related to the following, provide guidance & supervise engineers on these areas:
    • Vessel structure scantling review & Finite Element modelling and review
    • Fire and Safety plan review
    • General plan approval work for a variety of marine and offshore vessels
  • You will be responsible for overseeing the engineer's workload and completion of projects within the agreed time frame, deliverable and the applicable procedure.
  • You will also take part in the management of internal and external client relationships.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience
  • Minimum 15+ years of experience in the industry. Experience on small vessels (Yachts, High Speed Craft, Tugs), large vessels (Container Carrier, Tanker, Bulk Carrier) or Offshore Units.
  • B.S. degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
  • Familiarity with ship operations and shipbuilding practices is beneficial for the role.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrates understanding and ability to apply fundamental classification and quality concepts, practices and procedures.
  • The management skills to organize, plan and direct the work activities of other professional employees.
  • Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research).
  • Working knowledge of Class Rules, and Statutory Regulations (e.g.: SOLAS, ICLL, MCA Large Yacht Code, MARPOL, SPS Code, MODU Code).
  • The ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions to problems (i.e., the competence to demonstrate complex problem-solving skills).
  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the scope of statutory certification and services, and their anticipated future work. The knowledge and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, concerning technical issues to laymen and experts.
  • The human relations skills necessary to organize, direct and motivate entry, mid-, and senior level professionals. These skills are also necessary to develop strong client relationships at the highest levels.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent reports directly to the Manager level or higher. This position has a small team of engineers reporting directly.
