Site Description

The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia's detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.

Position Overview

The English Teacher must be willing to teach a range of English subject areas including English I, English II, English III, English IV, and/or Reading and Language Arts. With the support of a special education teacher, this position will also support students with special learning or emotional needs to ensure that they receive the level of instruction that they need to enable them to succeed.

Requirements

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
  • Designing and implementing curriculum including unit plans and assessments that are aligned both with Common Core standards and with the school-wide curricular framework at Maya Angelou Academy at YSC
  • Developing and implementing age-appropriate, culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Working with technology and computer-based programs to support scholars' individual learning plans
  • Successfully using a backward design model in creating a curriculum with clear objectives and goals directly related to end-of-year benchmarks
  • Developing differentiated learning plans, materials, and handouts for diverse learners in a small classroom setting
  • Assessing individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods to fit
  • Creating a classroom and school environment that features a rich diversity of resources engages student interest, promotes student leadership, and stimulates student learning
  • Managing administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity
  • Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all students
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in education or subject field (required)
  • Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (must obtain within 1 year of employment)
  • Experience working with opportunity or justice involved youth (preferred)
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Salary and Benefits

Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area. Compensation for instructional roles follows our established pay bands, which can be accessed from our career page .
