EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Industrial Hygiene, or a related discipline is required. Four years of directly related work experience in the principles of environmental/safety codes and regulations, and practices and techniques used in the conduct of environmental safety surveys, assessments, and accident investigations. Must have working knowledge of state and federal environmental standards, and industry standards applicable to environmental management. Experience with Environmental Health and Safety Programs in a transit environment is desired. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. In lieu of a degree, directly related work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

These may include exercises such as practical demonstrations, written communications, oral interviews and/or competency assessments.

SUMMARY

Under minimal supervision, assists in implementing and maintaining the Authority's environmental health and safety policies, procedures, and programs, including those related to environmental management systems, environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, general industrial safety, fire/life safety, electrical safety, and construction safety. Supports the maintenance of MARTA's regulatory permits in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Aids the Office of Environmental Health & Safety in coordinating with other departments on matters related to environmental, industrial hygiene, general industrial safety, fire/life safety, electrical safety, and construction. With oversight from higher level staff, holds the authority and responsibility to suspend unsafe and/or environmentally hazardous operations to protect employees, the public, property, and the environment.

Environmental Compliance

Supports the implementation and maintenance of the Authority's environmental health and safety programs, including environmental compliance, management systems, due diligence, and remediation. Duties include conducting inspections, assessments, and training sessions, as well as performing fieldwork and related activities. Additionally, may assist in developing programs and training materials to support these initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Under minimal supervision, assists in implementing environmental health and safety programs, policies, permits and procedures that establish standards and responsibilities for affected departments, divisions, and facilities to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws regarding environmental safety.

2. Conducts site inspections, field assessments and audits on personnel, equipment, and facilities to verify implementation and compliance with Authority EHS programs, policies, permits, and procedures.

3. Monitors the effectiveness of safety and environmental controls on work carried out by employees, consultants, contractors, and subcontractors in accordance with established standards. Collaborates with other departments to address open inspection items and other concerns.

4. Assists with the preparation of formal written reports to the Manager of Environmental Health and Safety. Assists with the preparation of reports as required for governmental agencies.

5. Provides technical assistance to functional areas concerning EHS programs. Provides support during regulatory inspections and other audits of the Authority's facilities.

6. Responds to and assists in the investigation of environmental spills, chemical releases, and similar incidents. Conducts and documents interviews with witnesses and responders.

7. Collects and reviews data associated with established EHS Program performance metrics (KPIs) for trend analyses and to recommend corrective actions. Conducts Indoor Environmental Quality and Industrial Hygiene Assessments.

8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES

The employee may be required to complete Public Transportation Agency Safety Certification after hire.
