Duties & Responsibilities
The primary duties and responsibilities of this Principal position include, but are not limited to,
Promote and assure a safe working environment and public safety
Operate in a manner consistent with the NiSource Core Values
Comply with company policies, procedures and best practices and other directives from management
Manage the NIPSCO groundwater monitoring program for compliance with the federal Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) rule and the state solid waste regulations
Support the NIPSCO CCR Team in the design and execution of closure plans for CCR impoundments and associated management units
Assist with managing and closure of environmental liabilities, including CCR management units, retired electric generating stations, gas storage and compressor stations, and former Manufactured Gas Plants (MGPs)
Assist in environmental Due Diligence reviews on behalf of the Company
Activities related to budgeting, spend/cash flow forecasting, participation in an annual probabilistic cost modeling process, and select Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) estimates
Act as a company representative for interaction with regulatory agencies, inspections, etc.
Develop and oversee the completion of investigation studies and remedial actions
Complete compliance inspections at your project sites and assist with periodic environmental audits, coordinate completion of corrective actions resultant of either
Coordinate and/or perform required environmental activities necessary to ensure environmental programs and permits are properly implemented at your project sites and attain 100% compliance
Day to day activities will include the collection and review of project information, development of project work plans and work scopes, review of technical reports prepared by others, review and interpretation of regulations, management of and work with consultants and contractors and development of costs estimates

Additional duties and responsibilities of this Principal position include, but are not limited to,
Maintain a working knowledge of current environmental regulations and the regulatory process
Analyze and interpret environmental related rules, regulations, policies and guidelines as necessary to meet applicable requirements and/or corporate directives
Prepare formal comments on proposed environmental regulations for submittal to state or federal agencies
On remediation projects, work with Communications and potential outside public relations consultant, to build Community Relation Plans, and other documents necessary to inform and educate our external community stakeholders
Coordinate with third-party consultants in reviewing data and formulating recommendations based upon analytical results
Management of spill response activities, as needed
Utilize existing systems, processes and procedures to identify and communicate opportunities for environmental related continuous improvement
Provide clear, concise and effective communication with business partners to keep leaders informed of environmental liability and project status

Qualifications
The minimum qualifications desired for this Principal position include, but are not limited to,
Bachelor's degree in an environmental related field
Minimum 8 years of environmental compliance and/or regulatory experience, or remediation experience; alternatively, minimum of 5 years of dedicated experience with the Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Rule
Be a self-starter with a high degree of initiative and ability to work both independently and within a team
Proficient technical skills and/or experience in areas involving environmental remediation, compliance, or risk management
Must have excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills
Ability to compose complex technical information in written form; it is expected that the applicant will be able to provide detailed interpretation of technical data regarding water, soil, sediment, air/vapor media characterization performed at sites
Experience in managing third-party consultants or vendors
Ability to develop and manage budgets and cash forecasts
Knowledge of groundwater remediation techniques
Working knowledge of environmental, water and waste management requirements, including RCRA, CERCLA, NPDES, and SPCC regulations with ability to analyze, identify issues/opportunities, and develop/communicate programs from a multifunctional, cross-process perspective to enhance business goals
Competent in the use of electronic spreadsheets and word processing software
Ability and willingness to travel

Additional qualifications preferred beyond the minimum requirements include, but are not limited to,
M.S. degree in an environmental related field
Dedicated experience with groundwater monitoring program management including the application of groundwater remediation techniques
Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) remediation experience
Experience in managing field-based construction/demolition activity
Skilled in principles of project management
Working knowledge of natural gas and/or electric generation/distribution operations
OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Training Certificate in place
Experience to analyze, interpret, present and communicate data for use as a basis for action to direct and cause continuous improvement

Salary Range*:
$110,200.00 - $165,300.00

*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
