South Dakota State University (SDState) invites applications for the Ethel Austin Martin (EAM) Chair and Professor of Human Nutrition which is supported by a substantial endowment. This position will advance knowledge in the science of human nutrition through an interdisciplinary approach, encourage practical applications in improving human health, and offer professional enrichment in human nutrition for all students, faculty, and staff. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, tenure-track, benefits-eligible position.

This position is housed in the College of Education and Human Sciences (EHS), which includes the School of Education, Counseling & Human Development and the School of Health & Human Sciences (https://www.sdstate.edu/education-human-sciences). This position reports directly to the Director of the School of Health and Human Sciences.

Over the past 20 years, the EAM Program has built interdisciplinary collaborations across SDState, state universities, healthcare systems, tribal entities, and community organizations. Program resources include lab and research space, offices, and a mobile research unit equipped for remote studies. Onboard imaging equipment includes a DXA scanner, pQCT devices, a BioDex, and a force plate. SDState also offers core facilities in functional genomics, mass spectrometry, genomic sequencing, and high-performance computing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead externally sponsored research related to human nutrition.
  • Serve as a human nutrition expert resource and contributor for university research, education, and outreach programming.
  • Lead the Ethel Austin Martin program, including hiring, supervising, and developing personnel.
  • Leverage resources to increase SDSU human nutrition research and education capacity through collaboration and outreach.
  • Provide an annual report demonstrating efforts towards the fulfillment of the endowment


SALARY RANGE:

The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications, starting at $140,000. In addition to this base salary the endowment provides a salary supplemental of $30,000 as well as approximately $50,000 in spending authority annually depending on the investment performance of the endowment.

Relocation benefits are available per university's guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Earned Ph.D., M.D., or Sc.D. degree in nutrition or a closely related field.
  • Eligible for the rank of Professor according to departmental, college and University standards.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an externally funded research program focused on emerging issues in human nutrition.
  • Ability to build collaborative research relationships across disciplines within the University as well as with outside stakeholders.
  • History of successful scholarship for nutrition related research.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Professional experience in a university or other professional institution or agency.
  • Experience designing, implementing and managing outreach programs.
  • Teaching experience in a university setting.
  • Experience in developing and monitoring financial budgets to ensure alignment with strategic goals.
  • Demonstrated success in multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
