Position Summary
WashU Medicine Orthopedics is a national leader in clinical care, education and research. By the numbers, they are #1 in Missouri, #3 in the U.S. for NIH research funding, #3 in the U.S. for surgical residency training and #13 and #24 by U.S. News & World Report for pediatric and adult orthopedic care, respectively. The Department's training programs provide education to more than 75 residents, fellows, and post-doctoral fellows annually. The department's clinical faculty, composed of 75+ physicians and surgeons, provide the full continuum of musculoskeletal care at more than 13 clinical locations. Annual patient volume exceeds 205,000 office visits and 18,000 surgical cases.
The Executive Director, Business Affairs is responsible for the financial, personnel, systems, facilities, and operational activities of the department encompassing its clinical, research, and teaching missions. In conjunction with the Department Chair, the position's primary goal is to ensure that faculty have the resources and infrastructure necessary to optimize their productivity in each mission domain while maintaining a sustainable financial model. The Executive Director reports to the Chair and is a member of the Vice Chair and finance committees.

Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Oversees department staff and in collaboration with key managers, ensures staff are well-trained, engaged, service oriented, and productive.
- Directs all department business functions such as human resources, planning, finance, accounting, revenue cycle, information systems, and purchasing.
- Oversees the department's appointment center and revenue cycle operations working collaboratively with the director to optimize patient pre-arrival, reception, charge capture, billing, and collection operations; establishes policies, procedures, and standards to optimize reimbursements.
- Administers faculty and staff compensation and incentive plans, develops analysis, and reviews year end results with individual faculty.
- In collaboration with Chairman, develops annual department plan including short- and long-term goals and objectives which include multiyear forecasts based on department objectives; assesses the financial impacts of new initiatives as well as those associated with internal and external trends and changing regulations (e.g., reimbursement changes and grant opportunities).
- Negotiates/recommends business aspects of contractual relationships, providing systems/procedures to implement contract administration.
- Manages financial reporting, operational reporting, and benchmark analysis; communicate results for both individuals, services, and department.
- Insures long-term financial stability and growth of the department while developing strategies for revenue enhancements and process improvement.
- Oversees communication and marketing plans to advertise/promote department's services, physicians, and locations.
- Plans utilization of existing departmental facilities and recommends allocation and use of new and remodeled space or service locations. Reviews and analyzes requests for space and recommends distribution of space for research and academic programs to Chair.
- Represents the department to the Medical School, university, and hospital leadership. Participates on various committees and activities on both a routine and ad hoc basis. Interacts with faculty, staff, school, hospital leadership, referring physicians, patients, and families in a positive and professional manner.
- Ensures Department is compliant with Washington University, Washington University School of Medicine, BJC Healthcare, and applicable federal/state laws and regulations in all areas of operation.
