Position Summary
The Uniform Patrol Officers will be responsible for general police duties within the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc. Such duties shall include the protection of life and property, the prevention of crime and the enforcement of all Federal and Provincial Statutes and Municipal By-Laws. The member shall be responsible for carrying out these duties, along with answering calls for service, within an assigned patrol area and a reasonable distance beyond. Members may be called upon to handle calls for service in other areas of the Municipality as the need arises.

Position Summary

The member shall be responsible for carrying out these duties, along with answering calls for service, within an assigned patrol area and a reasonable distance beyond. Members may be called upon to handle calls for service in other areas of the Municipality as the need arises.
Duties and Responsibilities
- At the commencement of each shift, be on parade at the required time, 15 minutes before the stipulated hour of duty. Shall ensure that his/her person is neat and clean. Be in possession of all Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service equipment issued, that is required for that tour of duty and adhere to Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service Procedures relative to the order of dress including the wearing of soft body armour.
- During parade, at commencement of shift, be required to record all pertinent information received from the Patrol Sergeant/Officer in Charge to enable the officer to discharge his/her duties in an efficient manner.
- Receive any returns and take the necessary action and return them to the sender without undue delay. Monitor workflow and complete reassignments and investigations in a timely manner.
- Be responsible for signing out all equipment as assigned including but not limited to a roadside screening device, a CEW and C8 rifle and Radar where qualified, a radio and for ensuring that it is in working order. At the completion of duty shall ensure that all equipment signed out is returned to its' proper location in good working condition, reporting any damage and/or malfunctions.
- Sign out the cruiser which has been assigned to his/her patrol area. Be responsible to ensure that all equipment is in the vehicle and that the vehicle equipment is in good working order. Check the vehicle for any damage and the interior of the vehicle for anything that may have been left behind by other officers or other persons. Ensure the appropriate forms will be filled out at the completion of the checks.
- Proceed without delay to his/her respective patrol area or duties and must not loiter within the station, unless on some official duty. (Such as accessing and reading BOLO and FYI entries)
- Unless otherwise engaged in the official discharge of their duty, members while on patrol, shall not depart from their assigned patrol area.
- When assigned on night shifts or at any other time when premises are closed, shall, on a selective basis, conduct a security inspection of industrial and retail business properties within the boundaries of their assigned patrol area.
- When assigned to mobile patrol, will take every opportunity to patrol on foot the shopping plazas, parks and other areas wherein the individual officer may interact with members of the community.
- When assigned to foot patrol, will take every opportunity to patrol those areas prone to unlawful activities and ensure that a visible police profile is evident within their assigned area.
- Notify the Communications Centre at the commencement of their relief; ideally relief will be taken at Headquarters unless otherwise authorized or at a location within the assigned patrol area ensuring that communications section is provided with the location and contact information.
- Perform his/her duties on all occasions with good temper, courtesy, patience and discretion, using only as much force as is necessary in the situation and in compliance with Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service procedure on use of force and reporting of same.
- Shall maintain a duty book as per Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service Procedure. Such duty book notes shall be submitted for scanning in all occurrences where Federal charges are or will be processed
- When responding to calls for service, and at all other times, the operator of police vehicles shall operate vehicles in accordance with Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service Procedure - Operation of Police Vehicles.
- When completing his/her tour of duty, shall not arrive at the station earlier than 30 minutes before the hour, unless exigency of duties requires earlier attendance and the Communications Centre has been advised. Ensure that all equipment is returned and signed in.
- At the completion of his/her tour of duty, be paraded off duty by the Patrol Sergeant/Officer in Charge. The officer will not leave until all occurrence reports have been completed and are submitted, unless otherwise approved by a supervisor in advance of departure. Any overtime to be performed by a member shall be authorized by a Supervisor.
- Adhere to the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service Procedure - Duties and Responsibilities of Members Attending Court, when notified for Court. Will ensure that he/she is on time, well prepared and brief their witnesses and notify the Court that they are ready to proceed.
- (Be required to familiarize themselves with) Are cognizant of (or familiar with) and adhere to all Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service Procedures.
- Be familiar with and, as calls for service allow for action, respond to criminal activity, traffic problems, high accident intersections, chronic complaint areas and other problems of his/her patrol area.
- Coach/Training Officers to complete training duties and responsibilities as assigned and in accordance with the training manual and practices of the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum OSSD or equivalent completed
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to starting employment
- Must have a valid Class "G" Ontario Driver's license with a satisfactory driver's abstract
- Valid Level C- First Aid and CPR Certification
- Successful completion of the Basic Constable Training (BCT) program at the Ontario Police College.
