Position Summary

The Facilities Engineer is responsible for the design, maintenance, and optimization of critical systems that support laboratory research and operational activities. This includes managing HVAC systems, cleanrooms, and utilities to ensure compliance with industry standards such as GMP, FDA, and ISO regulations. The role involves troubleshooting system issues, implementing energy-efficient solutions, and minimizing downtime to maintain high-quality laboratory processes in a highly regulated environment. Additionally, the Facilities Engineer will collaborate with Facility leadership to support all internal and external audits, ensuring continued compliance and operational excellence.

The Facilities Engineer leverages technical expertise while collaborating with cross-functional teams, including quality assurance, project managers, and research scientists, to meet the evolving needs of the facility. This role involves contributing to the successful execution of projects such as system upgrades, facility expansions, and the construction of new buildings. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a dedication to maintaining safety and operational excellence are essential. Additionally, the Facilities Engineer will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Building Automation System (BAS), implementing solutions within the system to ensure laboratory environmental conditions are consistently maintained.

Job Responsibilities
  • Design, maintain, and optimize critical facility systems, including Building Automations Systems, HVAC, cleanrooms, and utilities.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards such as GMP, FDA, and ISO through proper system management and documentation.
  • Conduct regular inspections, testing, and calibration of systems to maintain operational efficiency and reliability working closely with the facility Sr. Manager and Technicians.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to facility systems to minimize downtime and disruption.
  • Identify and implement energy-efficient solutions to reduce operational costs while maintaining system performance.
  • Oversee the performance and maintenance of critical environments to support laboratory research and production.
  • Collaborate with Facility leadership to prepare for and support internal and external audits.
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Building Automation Systems (BAS), ensuring laboratory environmental conditions are consistently maintained through system adjustments and optimizations. Lead all BAS upgrades, implementing advanced technology and modern controls strategies to enhance system performance and reliability.
  • Manage and oversee system upgrades, facility expansions, and the construction of new buildings or infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with quality assurance teams to ensure facility systems align with operational and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with research scientists and operational teams to support laboratory processes and specialized facility infrastructure needs.
  • Monitor system performance and recommend improvements to enhance safety, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional team meetings to address facility needs and prioritize projects.
  • Manage contractors and vendors involved in system upgrades and installations.
  • Evaluate new technologies and make recommendations for system enhancements or replacements.
  • Ensure workplace safety by adhering to OSHA guidelines and implementing best practices for facility management.
  • Act as a liaison between the facilities team and other departments to address operational challenges and ensure smooth communication.
  • Oversee and manage all commissioning activities by developing and maintaining comprehensive documentation, including URS, SOPs, Standards, Policies, and Master Plans, to ensure facility assets and processes remain in a state of control. Ensure all activities align with and adhere to the quality management system.
  • Manage the creation and revision of system and facility drawings, ensuring compliance with FDA regulations.
  • Oversee predictive and preventive maintenance of electrical systems, as well as the design, review, and implementation of electrical system solutions.
  • Lead CAPEX planning, project execution, budget management, and provide updates to executive leadership.


Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or related field) or equivalent technical experience in facilities management within a regulated environment.
  • Proven experience with critical systems such as HVAC, cleanrooms, utilities, and Building Automation Systems (BAS), preferably in a GMP, FDA, or ISO-regulated industry.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Facilities Management Professional (FMP), or similar credentials.
  • Experience managing facility expansion projects, system upgrades, or new construction within a life sciences or pharmaceutical environment.


Physical Demands
  • Must possess ability to sit, stand, and/or work at a computer for long periods of time.
  • May have exposure to blood-borne pathogens, extreme temperatures, high noise levels, fumes and bio-hazardous material/chemical including formalin in the lab environment.
  • Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
