Job Description:
Salary Range: $83,000 - $85,000 per year, DOE

Reporting directly to the Director for the School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE), at a senior level position, supervises and manages SESE's academic and research infrastructure support team. This team consists of one senior building automation specialist, and student workers as needed. Responsible for maintaining a highly diversified set of professional skills necessary to provide comprehensive technical service to mediated classrooms and complex research labs. As a senior staff member, responsibilities include staff supervision, project programming, design, construction, collaboration, communication, innovation, and leadership, in support of the University's facilities. Supports the research operations function which includes maintaining cleanrooms for space flight instrument assembly, trace metals labs (metal free) and mineral digestion labs all demanding precise temperature, humidity, and pressure controls.

Essential Duties:
  • Oversees project budgets, scheduling and deadlines, as well as the management of logistics and the potential for project-related impacts on the school. Collaborate with the University's: Architect; Project and Program Management Team; the College (CLAS) Facilities staff; and Facilities Management Team to create, review, and maintain the University's space, design, and construction standards. These efforts ensure that all projects are conducted in a manner that sustains security of the physical campus.
  • Performs multiple concurrent projects in various stages of development. Enforces numerous departmental procedures, programs, and policies to motivate our personnel in taking the actions necessary to meet ASU's mission, vision, and values, all of which focus on culture, workforce, student experience and innovation.
  • Effectively communicates ideas and directions; develops and mentors highly skilled professionals; promotes and encourages creativity; and inspires collaboration. Delivers strong leadership, organization, communication, and relationship management skills. Develops and maintains experience and knowledge in the continuous design and implementation of high-tech research laboratories, developing expertise in the following areas: mechanical, HVAC, electrical, process-piping, and furniture systems (FF&E).
  • Oversees ~161,149 square feet of space spread amongst eight separate campus buildings. Provides space survey data to both federal and local agencies. Works directly with CLAS and KEF regarding space utilization and space allocations. Has awareness and skills in building information systems.
  • Develops hiring strategies with Knowledge Enterprise Facilities (KEF) for specialized staff necessary to support critical research in the ISTB4 building.
  • Responsible for overseeing all SESE space management and utilization requirements, possessing the willingness and determination to prioritize occupant space requirements and to allocate resources in a quick and equitable manner.
  • Works directly with the BMS and Facilities team in identifying and resolving building system malfunctions. Monitor ISTB4 building automation systems related to SESE's critical labs. This includes daily monitoring of space flight clean labs, corrosive, radioisotope, perchloric and lab exhausts, temperature, pressure, and humidity in all critical labs.
  • Responsible for SESE's property asset inventory reporting directly to ASU's Capital Asset Managers (CAM).
  • Works directly with ASU's State Fire Marshal to maximize SESE's adherence to building fire code requirements, while minimizing disruption to the department's research productivity.
  • Coordinates building service shutdowns in a manner that minimizes disruptions to the department's research.
  • Supervise staff in overseeing building security by managing keys and ISAAC access for all users.
  • Supervise staff in supporting AV equipment in assigned SESE classrooms and conference rooms.
  • Mentor and supervise ISTB4's senior building automation specialist.
  • Inspects work accomplishments and job progress to ensure conformance to established standards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles
  • Evidence of effective communication, both verbal and written
  • Knowledge of administrative practices and personnel management, e.g. budgeting, procurement and personnel communications.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal codes and regulations and mandates.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with university users, building occupants, managers, peers, subordinate employees, vendors, and the general public.
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to quickly changing priorities, sensitive/confidential information, and short deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty and staff
  • Basic understanding of systems involving fluid flow (air and water), electricity, and heat transfer
  • Basic understanding of access restrictions needed to maintain and increase security
  • Working knowledge of commonly used hand tools, including portable saws, drills, compressors, generators, volt meters, and assorted testers.
  • Relational database design and maintenance
  • Experience with SQL, Power BI, FileMaker, and Report Builder (or equivalent)
  • Experience managing those who design, develop, and validate reports and data products to support administrative functions for the SESE facilities team using enterprise and/or internal data with a variety of business intelligence tools SESE products including Personnel, Keys Personnel, and Asset Management
  • Schedules and maintains batch processes that update records


Working Environment:
  • Activities are performed generally in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Occasional field work which requires accessing paved, rocky or uneven areas and exposure to dirt, dust, extreme temperatures and inclement weather
  • Occasional bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds
  • The field noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • May be exposed to hazardous and dangerous materials, tools, and equipment which will require safety precautions and/or specific process to be followed and may include the use of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (e.g. safety glasses, hearing protection, negative pressure and positive pressure respirator). Use of PPE may require medical clearance prior to use.
  • May drive University vehicles.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions


Minimum Qualifications:
Has a wide variety of research-related tasks requiring advanced training and skills and carried out with varying levels of independence.

Driving Requirement:
This position may require driving. Employee must possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
