PACO Group, Inc. (PACO) is seeking a Fare Collection Engineer to support the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) on its Fare Vending Machine Program Technical Support initiative. This program focuses on modernizing WMATA's fare collection systems and involves technical expertise throughout procurement, design review, testing, training, and deployment stages of new fare vending machine acquisitions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to help enhance fare system technologies, improving both operational efficiency and the rider experience.
Scope of Work

As a Fare Collection Engineer, you will be a key technical resource in the end-to-end lifecycle of fare vending machine deployments. Key Responsibilities
- Technical Review & Design Analysis
- Review and provide input on fare vending machine designs, ensuring alignment with WMATA technical requirements.
- Collaborate with vendors and internal teams to address design specifications, system integrations, and technical challenges.
- Testing & Evaluation
- Develop and execute testing plans for new and updated fare vending machines, including performance, durability, and user-experience assessments.
- Identify and troubleshoot issues during prototype and pilot stages, recommending improvements for system reliability and efficiency.
- Deployment & Implementation Support
- Assist in overseeing the installation, calibration, and configuration of fare collection hardware and software.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth rollout schedule and minimal impact on daily operations.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain thorough documentation of engineering decisions, test results, and system modifications.
- Ensure all equipment and procedures comply with WMATA's technical and safety standards.
- Training & Knowledge Transfer
- Provide technical guidance and training to WMATA staff, ensuring they can effectively operate and maintain fare collection systems.
- Create technical manuals, user guides, and other supporting materials as needed.
- Ongoing Support & Optimization
- Monitor system performance post-deployment, identifying areas for continued improvement.
- Participate in evaluating vendor change orders, modifications, and enhancements to maintain seamless fare collection operations.
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in fare collection systems, transit technology, or related engineering fields.
- Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of fare systems architecture, hardware-software integration, and payment technologies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Experience with project management software (MS Project, Primavera) is a plus.
- Communication & Collaboration
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with vendors, WMATA teams, and project management staff.
- Additional Requirements
- Familiarity with procurement and compliance processes in a public transit environment is advantageous.
