The Role
The Controller will oversee all financial aspects of the company, ensuring sound financial planning, reporting, and compliance. This role requires a hands-on professional who can manage bookkeeping, financial reporting, and strategic financial planning while supporting our growth. The ideal candidate has at least 7 years of experience in accounting or financial management, with a strong background in e-commerce, food, or subscription-based business models being a plus. Reporting to the CEO, you'll provide financial insights and guide strategic decisions to support our next stage of growth.
This position is in-office only and based in the Washington, DC metro area. Remote work is not available.
CPA certification is preferred but not required.

What You'll Do
Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Provide comprehensive financial updates to senior leadership by analyzing and reporting key data points.
- Develop, implement, and maintain financial controls and reporting standards.
- Establish and monitor financial benchmarks, budgets, and KPIs to drive strategic decision-making.
Accounting & Reporting
- Ensure accurate, timely, and GAAP-compliant financial reporting, including P&L, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
- Oversee day-to-day bookkeeping, ensuring accuracy in financial records and compliance with accounting principles.
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll processing.
Cash Flow & Cost Optimization
- Monitor and manage cash flow, working capital, and vendor payments to ensure financial stability.
- Identify and implement cost-saving initiatives to improve profitability without compromising quality.
- Support pricing strategies, margin analysis, and operational efficiencies.
Compliance, Risk Management & Payroll Oversight
- Ensure compliance with national and local tax regulations, financial laws, and industry best practices.
- Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners to optimize financial structure.
- Oversee payroll processing and financial policies to enhance operational efficiency.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Lead financial process automation and system enhancements to improve efficiency.
- Implement consistent accounting policies and workflows across departments.
- Support financial modeling for growth initiatives, funding, and M&A evaluations.
What We're Looking For
- 7-10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, preferably in DTC, CPG, e-commerce, or subscription-based businesses.
- CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred but not required.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial modeling, tax compliance, and unit economics.
- Experience managing payroll, accounting teams, and financial reporting standards.
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks, NetSuite, or other ERP/accounting software.
- Analytical mindset with exceptional attention to detail and strategic thinking.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
