Hillsboro Fire & Rescue is currently recruiting to establish a promotional list for the rank of Battalion Chief. The list will be active for a period of two years from the date it is established, or until the list is exhausted, and may be extended at the discretion of the Fire Chief. Qualified applicants must have successfully completed the Battalion Chief Officer Program to be eligible to test. Individuals who are not current City of Hillsboro employees are not eligible to apply.
For FY 2024-25 base salary ranges, please refer to Salary Schedule A of the Collective Bargaining Agreement that will be effective July 1, 2024.
General Statement of Duties
The principal function of an employee in this class is to provide direction and supervision for multiple fire companies and is accountable for overall incident command at an emergency scene. Responsibilities include providing administrative and policy support; responding to and directing activities and procedures related to life safety; managing assigned projects and programs; managing operational budgets; managing inventory; and overseeing the entry of vital data into applicable database(s). Incumbents' supervisory responsibility includes conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training; and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures. May be assigned to a 24-hour shift or a 40-hour workweek based on operational needs. Those assigned to a 40-hour workweek may be expected to provide Battalion Chief 24-hour shift vacancy relief, as directed.

Acceptable Experience and Training
Bachelor's degree in Fire Science or a closely related field and 6 years' experience at the level of Fire Lieutenant, with a completed Battalion Chief Development Program Task Book, or performing at the rank of Captain or above from a department of comparable size including supervisory responsibility; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

2024 Battalion Chief promotional exam components:
Tactical Simulation Assessment: Candidates will be assessed on their command and control of incident operations, resource management, tracking, and accountability, strategy, tactics, incident action plan, etc. using tactical simulations. Candidates should prepare for multiple scenarios related to various emergency incidents.
Weighted percentage: 50%
Panel Interview: Candidates will be assessed on their ability to answer interview questions in a panel interview format made up of internal and external evaluators. Candidates should prepare for questions that relate to the position, roles, and responsibilities of a Battalion Chief.
Weighted percentage: 25%
Chief's Interview: Candidates will be assessed on their ability to answer interview questions in a Chief's interview format based on issues that may include, but are not limited to personnel issues, post-accident procedures and mitigation, citizen concerns, personnel management, policy and or procedures, administrative and or logistics concerns, etc. Candidates will be assessed on their ability to communicate solutions to various issues as well as answer questions related to the position of Battalion Chief.
Weighted percentage: 25%
A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

- Valid driver's license and safe driving record;
- Department of Public Safety Standards and Training NFPA Fire Officer I Certification;
- Department of Public Safety Standards and Training NFPA Hazardous Materials On-Scene Incident Commander Certification;
- Department of Public Safety Standards and Training NFPA Apparatus Equipped with a Fire Pump (Pumper);
- Current Oregon Emergency Medical Technician-Basic or higher Certification;
- Department of Public Safety Standards and Training Strike Team / Task Force Leader within 1-year of appointment
