Summary

The Fire Inspector, under the direction of the Fire Marshal, is responsible for fire prevention, inspection, investigation, education, and emergency response. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local fire and life safety codes by evaluating fire suppression and detection systems, building services, and life safety hazards through plan reviews and inspections of new and existing multi-family residential, commercial, and industrial properties. Additionally, they conduct pre-fire and emergency planning, evaluate water supply for fire protection, and assist in community fire safety outreach, education, and risk reduction. A key aspect of this role involves collaboratively engaging with property owners, contractors, and the public to promote fire safety and compliance. The Fire Inspector also investigates the origin and cause of fires, working closely with public and private entities. They may respond to fires or medical incidents to assist command or fill other operational roles. The Fire Inspector may fill the role of Fire Marshal when necessary.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Conducts fire inspections of new and existing buildings, ensuring compliance with state and local fire codes.
Performs plan reviews for fire protection systems, including sprinkler and alarm systems, and ensures proper installation and function.
Provides recommendations for plan and specification changes for compliance with fire code and facility needs.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with building managers and owners.
Investigates reports of code violations and enforces corrective actions to ensure compliance.
Coordinates pre-fire planning efforts and ensures accessibility to emergency personnel.
Stays up to date with fire codes, regulations, and industry best practices to provide accurate recommendations and enforcement.
Maintains accurate records of inspections, violations, and follow-up actions in accordance with department policies.
Coordinate fire prevention and education programs and annual open house.
Develops and delivers fire prevention education and community risk reduction programs for schools, businesses, and community organizations.
Partners with the Communications department to develop fire prevention and safety information for presentation to the community.
Participate in fire investigations to determine the origin and cause, working alongside the Fire Marshal, law enforcement, local, state, and federal agencies, private investigators, and industry experts.
Supports incident command during emergency incidents and may be assigned to an operational role as needed.
Provide support to the Fire Marshal and serve in their capacity when required.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of experience in fire service, fire inspections, or a related field.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.
Fire Inspector I Certification (Minnesota or IFSAC Accredited) or ability to obtain within six months.
Fire Inspector II Certification (Minnesota or IFSAC Accredited) or ability to obtain within twelve months.
IAAI Fire Investigation Technician certification (or equivalent) within two years of employment.
National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700.

Desirable Qualifications:
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection, Public Safety, Building Inspection, Construction, or a related field.
Plan review training or certification.
Fire investigation training (NFPA-compliant).
Experience managing public fire safety education programs.
IFSAC or Pro-Board Accredited Firefighter I and II Certification.
Ability to obtain Minnesota Firefighter License upon hiring.
Hazardous Materials Operations Certification.
Current NREMT-B Certification (or higher) with the ability for certification in Minnesota.
Fire Apparatus Operator
Blue Card Command Certification

Persons with related education, training, and experience interested in the Fire Inspector position without fire suppression or EMS duties and associated qualification requirements will be considered.
Additional Information
Strong knowledge of fire codes, inspection procedures, and prevention practices.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans, and fire protection system specifications.
Knowledge of technical and mechanical requirements for fire protection systems plan review.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a professional and courteous manner.
Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues, contractors, business owners, and the public verbally and in writing.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and fire department records management software.
Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Knowledge of fire suppression and investigation techniques.

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL CONTACTS:
Daily contact with Fire Department personnel, building inspectors, and city staff.
Regular interaction with contractors, business owners, and members of the public.
Collaboration with law enforcement agencies, state and federal fire officials, and community organizations.
