Introduction

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is recruiting to fill a Natural Resources Region Team Supervisor position in the Fitchburg Field Unit to supervise and implement all aspects of the fisheries management program within that unit.

This position will work out of the Fitchburg, Poynette, or Dodgeville office, depending on business needs and location of the selected candidate. Remote work will be available, after the initial onboarding period. The exact amount is based on program need and supervisor discretion.

Wisconsin's Fisheries Management program is responsible for protecting, maintaining, and developing Wisconsin's fisheries and aquatic resources. The program annually employs 200+ positions and spends over $30 million to manage fisheries in Wisconsin's 15,000+ lakes, 42,000 miles of perennial streams and rivers, 2 Great Lakes and 1,000 miles of their shoreline and 260 miles of the Mississippi River.

Position Summary

This Fisheries Team Supervisor is responsible for leading the Fitchburg Fisheries Work Unit which encompasses 16 counties in the southern portion of the state. This position will provide leadership and direction to staff, as well as coordinating work and policy with several other state and federal agencies.

The incumbent will represent the Bureau of Fisheries and the Department of Natural Resources through external contacts with elected officials, local officials, external partners, private groups, community organizations, and customer contacts.

The person in this position hires, supervises, and evaluates the technical performance of professional and technical staff including fisheries biologists, fisheries management technicians, fisheries creel technicians, project and limited term positions, and volunteers.

The position is responsible for administration and oversight of fisheries management activities within the unit including the operational budget.

Salary Information

Starting pay for this position is between $38.00 to $43.00 per hour ($79,040 to $89,440 annually). This position is included in the classification Natural Resources Region Team Supervisor within Pay Schedule/Range 81-03. This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Travel: Travel within the area will be frequent, with periodic statewide travel required.

Probation: A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Required qualifications for this position include the following experience:
  • Mentoring, leading, directing, or coaching a team.
  • Applying fisheries management principles - including paid or unpaid experiences in fisheries ecology, fisheries population dynamics, quantitative analysis, survey design, sport fishing survey, fisheries statistics, population management, habitat assessment, sport or commercial fishery regulations.
  • Collaborating and communicating on complex topics, both verbally and through written correspondence, with diverse stakeholders - such as the general public; federal, state, local and tribal government; fisheries, lake, river and stream user groups; conservation groups; fishing business and tourism interests, etc.
In addition to the above, best-qualified applicants will also have a combination of the following:
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Fisheries Management, Ecology, Aquatic Science, or related field.
  • Formal experience supervising employees (hiring, dismissing, performance reviews, disciplining, etc.)
  • Experience overseeing development or implementation of fisheries workplans and budgets .
