Performs and documents medicolegal postmortem examinations and autopsies, and reviews medical and toxicology reports to determine the cause and manner of unattended and unnatural deaths occurring within the County's jurisdiction
This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited school of medicine, completion of a accredited residency in pathology and completion of a forensic pathology fellowship.
(Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record. Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of Arizona and certification in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology is required at the time of appointment or within three years of appointment as a condition of employment; failure to obtain and maintain such licensure/certification shall be grounds for termination.
Special Notice Items: Some positions may require completion of a satisfactory personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems. The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County. Department of Labor regulation CFR 1910.1030 requires notification that this category may have a high risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. Hepatitis B vaccine will be provided.
Physical/Sensory Requirements: Constantly required to exchange accurate information. Constantly uses fine motor skills to utilize computer equipment and healthcare equipment. Constantly required to observe details at close range. Occasionally required to move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Occasionally operates a motor vehicle safely and legally, in accordance with applicable state and federal transportation laws. Must have valid driver license and clean driving record.
Working Conditions: Occasionally exposed to hazardous fluids. Occasionally exposed to the risk of needlesticks and exposure to communicable diseases.

- Analyzes and interprets results of toxicology and histology tests, and correlates the results with the findings of the postmorten examination, additional laboratory test results, medical records, law enforcement reports, and evidence presented
- Compiles accurate and complete autopsy reports, stating the causes and manner of death for submission to the medical examiner
- Uploads photographs taken pre- and post-autopsy, as well as information from death certificates and supporting documentation into the database
- Initiates, authorizes, and issues death certificates
- Reviews and approves cremation permits and ensures that all deaths have been reported to the medical examiner
- Supervises forensic autopsy technicians assisting with autopsies, and supervises and teaches undergraduate and medical students, pathology residents, forensic pathology fellows, and first responders
- Liaises with attorneys appointed to individual cases, lodges depositions, appears in court and at grand juries to present expert testimony, and discusses autopsy findings with decedents' family members, next-of-kin, law enforcement agencies, and other parties involved
- Maintains close and continuing working relationships with law enforcement, public health, and other agencies to promote cooperation and communications on matters of mutual interest
- Creates manual, automated and computerized records of medicolegal activities in compliance with county, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
