AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Reporting to the Supervisor, Urban Forestry, this role is one of two that share responsibility for day-to-day operation of a team that maintains the City's tree management system. This ensures that operating departments are able to deliver according to customer expectations and City service plans, and ensures the long term sustainability of Brampton's evolving urban forest.
Provide daily staff supervision, to a team of unionized staff in the Forestry crew. Is readily available to answer staff questions, provide on-the-job training and clear instructions. Accountable for scheduling and coordination of staff activities to ensure efficient operation while meeting standards and in full compliance of regulations. Participate in union/management meetings when required. Develop and oversee staff training for procedures or equipment specific to the Forestry trade. (eg. Climbing, chainsaws, chippers, and aerial lift devices).
Schedule and oversee work. Set the work schedule to ensure the most efficient use of manpower, equipment and materials. Review and monitor standard operating procedures and recommend changes. Review specs for new equipment and provide recommendations. Provide subject matter expertise to staff and contractors to best protect the interests of the corporation and the trees in question as required.
Administrative work. Prepare reports on current crew status, various concerns, budget items, long and short term goals and other departmental issues as they arise i.e; co-ordinate warranty work and limit downtime. Assist in preparing budgets.
Engage/contractors. Provide direction and supervision to contractors performing any tree related maintenance. Inspect and grant or deny acceptance of all plant material installed by private contractors. This would entail the preparation and enforcement of contract specifications and the analysis of performance and the approval of payment. Work with vendors for parts ordering, and for contracting of work to ensure adherence to City and legislative policies.
Public service. Respond to all public and internal inquiries regarding trees and provide a response or initiate follow-up action as required.

EDUCATION:
- University degree or Community College Diploma in Parks Managements, Arboriculture/Horticulture, Forestry or related program
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years experience in Urban Forestry field along with 3-year experience supervising unionized staff where staff work aloft
Mandatory Requirements
- Must possess a valid Ontario non-probationary class G driver's licence, DZ licence preferred.
OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:
- Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with the public.
- Landscape pesticide license preferred:
- Safety & Awareness for Line Clearing Certificate (IHSA)
- Solid computer literacy with knowledge of MS Office
- Knowledgeable of Occupational Health & Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Employment Standards Act and other applicable legislation and standards
- Ability to schedule work and meet deadlines
- Willing to work shifts and be on 24 hour call duty when required
