General Assignment Reporter

The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom is looking for an ambitious and dogged reporter to join our Day-of team, which covers breaking news and public service stories that affect New Yorkers.

The right candidate is flexible, comfortable working on a variety of issues and platforms, holds themselves to the highest levels of journalistic excellence and works quickly to make sure that our audiences can get the news they need in the way they want it. This reporter should have an understanding of and affinity for reporting that will resonate with New Yorkers and thrive in a collaborative news environment.

This reporter will ensure that the most relevant and timely news makes it to our airwaves and website. This reporter will also occasionally assist other reporters and editors in a rewrite capacity as needed.

This is a key role in a newsroom that covers the most fascinating region in America. Our newsroom strives to make this region work for the people who live here, and has ambitious goals to reach new, diverse audiences through impactful, audience-focused journalism.

This position reports to a Day-of editor and has a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.

Responsibilities:
  • Report and produce news stories in both text and audio form that are clear, thorough, fair, timely and accurate
  • Conceive, source and pitch stories for the Day-of desk that will engage listeners and readers, answering pressing questions and giving daily utility that drives audience habits
  • Assist other reporters and news editors in a rewrite capacity to ensure that news stories can make the air and website as quickly as possible
  • Consistently meet publication deadlines
  • Effectively coordinate with other news editors and digital journalists for maximum reach across our platforms
  • Enthusiastically participate in newsroom-wide efforts to improve workflows, policies, breaking news and major story event coverage.

Qualifications:
  • At least 3 years of professional daily news experience
  • Experience in using production systems and software tools required to edit, produce and curate content on a variety of platforms
  • Aptitude and comfort with using a broad range of media, including audio and text
  • Knowledge of basic SEO and other digital audience skills
  • Ability to move ideas quickly from concept to completion
  • Ability to see the story that's going to engage readers and to anticipate reader interests
  • Deft writing and editing skills, including the ability to sharpen or rewrite copy under immediate deadline pressure
  • Sophisticated communication skills, including oral, written, and public speaking
  • Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism along with impeccable journalistic integrity and judgment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issues
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
  • Ability to manage several story assignments concurrently
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of reporting
  • Basic understanding of data gathering, including the ability to read and interpret data from a variety of sources
  • The ability to work effectively and/or interact with the public and with other staff at New York Public Radio


Additional Information

This is a full-time role with a salary range of $90,423.21 - $93,000 per year (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and organizational pay equity. New York Public Radio offers excellent medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, personal and sick time as well as parental leave.

This role is currently operating in a hybrid capacity, with the ability to sometimes work from home. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from the NYC newsroom on specified days with regularity.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New York Public Radio and SAG-AFTRA.
