Description:
Viant is seeking an experienced and results-driven General Manager to lead our Design and Development business. As the GM, you will oversee a talented team of engineers who are at the forefront of creating innovative solutions in advanced surgical technologies, bioelectronics, drug delivery, interventional therapies, orthopedics and more. With a team of 130+ skilled professionals and a robust portfolio of over 60 active projects, we are known for commercializing several programs per year. In this leadership role, you will guide product development, foster business growth, and ensure we continue to push the boundaries of design excellence. Leveraging the Viant network of engineers and manufacturing plants, this role will focus on securing long-term partnerships with both emerging and established medical device companies.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive technical expertise, leadership experience, a strong understanding of the medical device industry, and the ability to drive business development efforts to accelerate growth. You will play a key role in shaping the future of our design and development initiatives while also contributing to the expansion of our customer base and revenue generation.
This is a remote position supporting Design and Development locations in Fremont, CA and Wilmington, MA.

Key Responsibilities:
Metrics & Reporting:
- Achieve ambitious revenue and profitability goals.
- Regularly report on the progress of projects and business development efforts to the executive team.
- Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure utilization, timely project completion and adherence to budget
Leadership & Team Management:
- Act as senior management contact to key customers
- Lead, mentor, and develop a cross-functional team of 100 engineers working on cutting-edge medical technologies.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement across all design and development teams.
- Ensure alignment of the team's activities with Viant's overall strategic goals, while maintaining high standards of quality and customer satisfaction.
- Oversee the management of 60+ active projects, ensuring timely execution, efficient resource allocation, and adherence to budget and quality standards.
Product Design & Development:
- Oversee the entire product development lifecycle, ensuring that the team delivers high-quality, manufacturable solutions across diverse markets.
- Provide technical oversight for projects in materials, coatings, simulations, and bioengineering to create next-generation medical devices.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure products meet both market demands and regulatory requirements.
- Drive innovation and continuously assess emerging technologies and industry trends to maintain a competitive edge.
Business Development:
- Partner to create a strategic plan that includes understanding aspects of the company, the customers and the competition to develop a differentiated offering and effectively bring it to market.
- Set the direction of prospecting efforts for new business opportunities, leveraging relationships and industry insights to create a pipeline of potential clients. Guide Commercial Director of D&D in implementation.
- Collaborate with the Commercial Director of D&D, the commercial team and D&D leadership to identify shared opportunities and strengthen relationships with existing customers.
- Actively participate and in some cases lead customer meetings and presentations, positioning Viant's design and development capabilities to secure new projects and expand business.
- Take ownership of the sales process, from lead generation to closing and contracting, ensuring customer needs are met and opportunities are converted into long-term partnerships.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field with a strong working knowledge of industry regulations, quality standards (ISO, FDA), and best practices in medical device development and manufacturing
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in design and development management, with a strong background in medical devices, engineering, or a related technical field.
- Proven track record of leading product development teams to deliver innovative, high-quality medical devices.
- Strong knowledge of the orthopedics, bioelectronics, surgical robotics, drug delivery, and interventional therapy sectors.
- Experience in business development, with a demonstrated ability to close deals, negotiate contracts and grow customer relationships.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
- Experience managing large, cross-functional teams and overseeing complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
