Job Responsibilities
Supervises the Geotechnical Design Quality Assurance Unit. Manages the labor, workload, and resources of the Geotechnical Design Quality Assurance Unit to ensure accurate and timely completion of work assignments. Facilitates communication between the Quality Assurance Unit with the designer until all comments are satisfactorily resolved.
Provides quality assurance reviews to determine compliance with geotechnical design standards on department and consultant prepared design-build documents, structures and roadway plans, engineering technical reports, design criteria, and encroachment permits.
Coordinates with the Geotechnical Policy Engineer to improve plan deficiencies by recommending revisions to policies, procedures, and manuals.
Independently coordinates with the Office of Engineering Support, Regional Production Groups, and other areas of the department, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and consultants to resolve geotechnical design issues related to quality assurance reviews.
Prepares scope of services, man-hour estimates, and negotiates contracts for outsourcing of design reviews. Reviews consultant deliverables, prepares consultant evaluations, and reviews and approves consultant invoices for payment. Serves as the Geotechnical Design Support Engineer in his/her absence. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor's degree in Engineering and five (5) years of engineering work experience. Necessary Special Requirement: Registration as a Professional Engineer by the South Carolina State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time. This position may require occasional travel. May require bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergency situations.
